Natural Sea Sponge or Sheepskin Wash Mit

Can't figure out what i'm doing wrong. I'm finding more and more swirl marks on my car. At first I thought it was because of the microfiber drying towels but the direction of the swirls make it look like its being caused by the wash mit.

I wash my car starting from the top, going in left to right motions, rinsing the wash mit frequently. I don't have a grit guard but I don't throw the mit into the bucket, it stays on my hand the entire time I wash my car.

Would using a natural sea sponge reduce the swirls or increase it? After reading the description on autogeek it says to rinse out the sponge because particles of sand might still be trapped in the pores.
