215 is the width in milimeters, the 40 is describing sidewall height which stands for 40% of the width, 17 is the rim size in inches.
The tire you've selected is too small, in fact they'll be really goofy and rubber bandy looking. If the looks won't put you off then consider the rotational size. The stock tire is 215/50-16 and I would suggest 225/50-17 which is much closer in rotational diameter to the stock size.
The tires you selected are:
.84in SHORTER in the sidewall height
2.18in SMALLER in circumference
The 225/50-17 is:
.20in LARGER in the sidewall height
If you don't know anything about tires, even enough to know what the numbers mean, you shouldn't be second guessing the suggestions these people are offering. You also need to be sure that the tires you select have an adequate speed and load rating for safety so you don't end up with a blow-out. Saving money and dying is false economy at best. Don't save money on brakes next year either!
