Hmm, not 100% sure I understand what you are referring to. On the engine side against the firewall is a valve that opens and closes. This valve lets hot coolant flow through the heater core creating heat in the heater assembly shown above. Within this assembly are different "flaps" or doors that are opened and closed to control the flow of air to push air through the heater core and/or evaporator (for cooling). There is a motor that controls the mix of hot and cold air, and another that controls other flaps to control the air to different places, ie feet, dash vents, or defroster vents. All the above except for the single valve in the engine compartment are all within the heater assembly above.
