You make an interesting point, but consider this: you can also use it as a diagnostic tool, to try to prevent catastrophic failure by early detection of the signs of such - one of which might be increased metal shavings on your magnetic drain plug.
I don't know about you, but I would rather find out I need a new crank during an oil change than during a nice drive.
