I've never been to a strip before, but I would just start talking with the guys you think you could beat (if your racing for $), or who you think would make a good race (if your racing for fun). Ask about the car, ask what mods they have, ask to see them under the hood. Familiarize yourself with what different motors look like so you can identify a swap. Know how to spot nitrous
And there's nothing wrong with losing to a civic. After you both leave the track, it's still a civic, no matter how fast it is.
