I have problems with some of what he has done (I had more problems with what Clinton did, but we were all getting rich, so what did I care?), some of which you have pointed out: Increasing the deficit (the war, I know), increasing the size of the government (the war, I know. Also, he was opposed at first to Homeland Security, but only because it would give Dethred fodder), the pre-emptive strike sticks in my craw as well. I think conservatism has been a bit hijacked lately: Conservatives should work toward smaller government, therefore smaller budgets with less taxes, and a strong military. Bush came in wanting to change the military...into what? And in my mind, under the whole reason you want government smaller is to be less invasive in the affairs of its citizens, so homosexual marriage, etc., should not be an issue for a constitutional amendment...Niether should flag-burning, esp. if the burner would be kind enough to wrap themselves in the flag.
But I have an issue with people who don't vote, so I will vote. But for John Kerry? No way. And that's the problem you liberals have. The best candidate you've put forth in 30 years was Bill Clinton (who was a sacrificial lamb because the party establishment thought HW was unbeatable), and by 1996 he had moved himself so close to the center many of his policies were *juuuust* a bit left of right-wing, so it made him very electable. His DLC has had issues with Kerry in the past, because Kerry is such a bleeding heart liberal. I'd be worried if I were a liberal with this guy--He can't make or sustain any momentum, he should be trouncing Bush right now (Clinton, Bill or Hillary would be), and the President has not yet truly begun to campaign or politick--And make no mistake about it, G. W. Bush likes the campaign game. If you're lucky, W messes up in a debate. If you're lucky, W misses on his convention speech. But if you are unlucky, and W starts to look Presidential like he did in the weeks after 9/11, Kerry will go down in flames, the democratic party will reel from in-fighting between the DLC and the "progressive" wing, and Hillary will come out of it all as your new leader. So when Kerry says this is the most important election ever, yeah, it is--If you're a liberal democrat.
