High beams are awesome. The general rule of thumb is that you use them whenever your regular headlights arn't good enough. Like on hills with alot of windy roads and your headlights can't shine far enough for you to predict the turns. Of course, they are blinding has hell to people in front of you, whether they are head on or driving in front of you, so remember to turn them off.
