I did this last weekend because the last two times it rained, I got the ol' gallon of water on my head. I was amazed at how much stuff came out of the body area behind the front mud flaps - I easily got at least twice as much out as you did.
When you're cleaning out the mud from behind the front mud flaps, if you look up inside that area, you can actually see the tit of the drain hose. I reached in there and squeezed it open, it felt like the ends were stuck together.
Pouring water in the corners of the sunroof helped flush out the dirt -- kinda like your air pump idea (I didn't have an air pump).
Good instructions -- I wish they were around before I did the job last week!
