Unfortunatley, until Telion gets some good dyno time and all around great feedabck from a daily drivability standpoint, the bayou chip, formally Dinan is as complete of a chip as they come. Proven time and time again to produce instant results.

Ultimatly Mike D and I will move to a fully managed unit, which im sure others will follow once its established.

As I've been doing some research, I came across these:
http://www.hondanews.com/CatID3007?m...asc&archives=t

and

http://hondanews.com/CatID3007?mid=2...asc&archives=t

These articles are Acura press releases regarding the RL's engine, and I found this excerpt from the 2002 model to be of particular interest:

"VARIABLE-SILENCER
The 2002 RL achieves a 15-horsepower increase over the 2001 model in part thanks to a new variable silencer. A special valve in the first exhaust chamber within the muffler is able to route the exhaust as needed for quiet operation and, when applicable, reduced back pressure for improved power output. Under normal driving conditions, the valve is closed - channeling exhaust flow through the entire muffler tract for maximum noise reduction. During hard acceleration, however, at 3500 rpm the valve opens - allowing exhaust to flow directly to the muffler's dual exit chambers for improved flow and enhanced engine output."

There's the 15 hp in question. Another thing I also found interesting is the fact that this appears in the 1996 AND 2002 article:

"Block-Forged Connecting Rods

The connecting rods of the RL are forged using a unique process, one that results in parts of high strength and unprecedented uniformity. The RL engine is the first automobile engine in the world to be produced using this advanced technology.

Because of the imprecise nature of the conventional forging process, the connecting rods of all other auto engines must be sorted according to weight, with rods of approximately equal mass assigned to each particular engine to achieve proper reciprocating balance. And even in rods that happen to have equal overall mass, the distribution of metal density throughout conventional rods can vary enough to affect strength and engine balance.

The rods of the RL are forged with a new "block forging" system, in which the steel blank is struck, at extremely high pressure, from five directions at once. This process has no allowance for excess metal; it has nowhere to go in the ultra-precise block forging dies. Accordingly, the blanks that will be forged into RL rods are machined, before the forging process, to exacting mass tolerances. In other words, the material that will become an RL connecting rod has been precisely measured and balanced before it ever enters the forging dies.

As a result of this process, RL connecting rods are the most precisely balanced of those in any production automobile engine."

So it would appear that 1996+ RLs all have forged rods, not just the 2002+.

thank you very much.

I do know for a fact there is a muffler design difference in 2002 so that is legit and is why I was thinking of going with an OEM muffler off an RL for more flow(Kenso swapped to a type 2 muffler for more flow rate over type 1)

So I guess everyone has their reason to go with the 3.5 now and if you want more peformance just add a larger intake valve and some type 2 cams and your set. o and the headers..lol

thanks for the info man! much appreciated.

There's the 15 hp in question. Another thing I also found interesting is the fact that this appears in the 1996 AND 2002 article:
The 15hp is more than just the exhaust. There are ecu programming changes that affect the ignition timing, plus some changes to the intake tract (I believe this refers to the air cleaner and intake resonator piping, not the actual manifold). When you get right down to it, none of that affects what we're doing here, since we're not using the RL exhaust or ecu.

"The '02 RL has significant improvements in the following areas:

Increased Engine Performance
- 225 hp @ 5200 rpm, up 15 hp from 2001 model
- Revised air intake improves flow
- Variable silencer reduces back pressure
- Optimized ignition timing for better combustion"

http://hondanews.com/CatID3007?mid=2...asc&archives=t

Like you mentioned, all C35 RL motors have the same rods, I don't know where the rumor got started that they were different in '02.

I think the rumor about the 02 having forged rods was related directly to seeing the increase in horsepower and torque. Good to know all that information though. I don't have to worry about exhaust, intake, or ecu, since I'm not using any of that.

I can't wait to see what headers, cams, and chip do for the power of this engine.

Mike, you might want to switch up your DIY b/c it mentions that the 02-04 RL 3.5s are the one's to find b/c of the forged rods and more power output. It would now seem that these are now moot points.

I am back up in Northern WI now. I will be in chicagoland mid december and I am still working close with Alperovich in the performance sector and will be taking care of stuff up here(lower labor rate etc anyways..)

Contact him with any info you need from the area. I do know about some of the local performance shops etc if thats what you need.
