Is a 96-04 RL the only source for a 3.5 block?

Damn that kinda sucks, I have a better chance of shoehorning a 5.0l in there than i do of finding a CHEAP RL engine around here.
So is the C32A5 what people refer to as the Type II motor, or is it something else?
