yea, there are 4 diff ecus....the ones for the Type I Auto, Type I Manual, Type II Auto, and Type II Manual. But if youre just doing a Type I-Type II swap, you can get away by still using the Type I ECU, but the Type II would still be best. And if youre not sure about the differences between the Type I and Type II, check the newbie FAQ.

and yea, autos need auto ECU, manuals need manual ECUs

The Type II ECU is different than the Type I,
so they've got separate aftermarket chips.

The auto and manual ECUs are different too.

the years dont matter...all that matters is whether the engine is Type I or II and manual or automatic. Switching ECUs from an auto 91 Base Sedan to an auto 95 LS Sedan would work because both are still Type I's and both auto.

the California/Federal thing is only based on the required emmisons. A non-CA car can have higher emmieions. If you do not live in Cal. I would recomend any aexhaust that fits your non-CA cars system. Other than that have fun!

When you take into acount, 49-state ECUs, Manual VS auto, TCS vs non TCS, you have many many ECUs floating around.

where did you come up with 49 different state ECUs, california is the only specific one because of their rediculous emission laws. thats where there are cali, and federal ecus.

and i dont think there is a different one for TCS, i think the tcs system runs through the abs and speed sensors on the hubs of the front wheels. but someone could probably correct me on this. the system is very simple compared to stuff you see today.

49 State ECU is the Federal ECU. There is a different one for TCS, if you take a NON-TCS ECU out of a Legend and put it in a Legend TCS car, you will get a TCS light come on and possibly a check engine light, same if you reverse it. This is one of the reasons there was many complications when the ECUs were being chipped.

The TCS system might be one of the first systems to come out, but it still uses the ECU to control the amount of RPMs the engine will be able to put out, via the throttle.

from the great MikeD:

Quote:
as far as I know, that you can use it for the models L to L and
LS to LS (means Coupe to Coupe and Sedan to Sedan). Here is the part No. (Coupe to Coupe and Sedan to Sedan absolute the same.

Caution: You can also use the ECU from the LS Coupe into the L Coupe, but NOT THE OTHER WAY RETURN!!! (Means L Coupe into LS !!!)

And the next different is, if you own an Type II Legend (235 PS). These engins owns an different ECU (because TCS = Traction Control System). The Type II L Coupes donīt have an TCS system !!!
Hope this helps...
