Lightbulb Flywheel GB Interest

Ok, time to bring the next project to surface....

I am/ have been working on a lightened 5spd flywheel project. I have quotes to have the flywheel made from aluminum minus the ring gear. We would use a core for the ring gear and swap them. The surface area will be able to be replaced when necessary with minimal labor. I would like to take indications of interest and see if this may go the way the pullies did. I am guessing they will weight in at about 11-13lbs allowing the engine to rev freely and liberate a few ponies. Hopefully 10-20 whp will be visable on the dyno, but not effect daily driving.

Thanks fellas!

Do you have a link to aluminum flywheels made for other cars so i have an idea of what you're planning? Would the friction portion of it be made of steel/alloy? What would be the long term effects on the crankshaft of a 90* motor with a lowered weight flywheel and/or crank pulley?

There are a few in Summit which are- will be simular. The friction areas will be made of a steel aloy of some sort. What ever will be the most durable for daily driving is what I will use. I imagine less weight equals less stress on the engine. The engine is internally ballanced, and according to local engine builders it will have no negative effect. I will continue to try and get more confirmed data on this.

Thx for the questions!

someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the flywheels are interchangeable from 5 to 6speed...a lot of guys are putting OEM 5speed flywheels on their existing 6speed setup due to the reduced weight.

and hell yea, I'm interested!

I have heard they are interchangeable, but do not know for sure. I will be doing this off of a 5spd flywheel.

Timeframe as of now is up in the air. These are not cheap so I am trying to figure out if there is interest if I eat the upfront cost.

GrtOutdoorsAZ- I am going down to the shop to get your PS pully early tom. Hopefully I can get it to you this weekend!

Peace, Kyle

You can use the 5MT flywheel with the 6MT transmission IF you use a 5MT clutch as well (which, in turn, requires 5MT mounting bolts too IIRC)

it does require the whole 5spd setup to work on a 6spd, flywheel, clutch, and i think you're right the bolts too maybe, but i'm not sure about those.

I'm positive they're necessary, I just don't remember if they're on the clutch side or flywheel side.

I think they're on the flywheel side...

Might be on both?

there's bolts holding the flywheel to the crank, i know the auto bolts are real short, and the 6spd are long. idk about 5spd

there are also bolts that hold the clutch assembly (cluch and pressure plate) to the flywheel, those might be different too.

I'll look up the part #'s
