okay, a waste of what money, cars this age are due for a fresh plug, I know mine are and the price difference between oem and mdp are likely to be minimal. And I'd prefer to get rid of any crap as it happens rather than have it float around until "when" the oil gets changed. I did not waste my money, repeat to self, I did not waste my money it's gonna be shinny and cool

Even if they don't pick up all the metal, they do get metal that would otherwise be circulating right? With oil being changed as often as it should be, they probably aren't necessary, but it is nice to see the results of one working. Oh, and just because some guy makes an official looking post on a 'blog doesn't make him an expert on the subject.

I tried one of those oil filter magnets and it picked up a lot of small particles (I cut the filter open). They may have been filtered by the oil filter anyway, but they also could have lowered the filter's efficiency by plugging the media.

isnt that why you have an oil filter and a screen on the oil pick up tube.... more for another bullet on the mods list... i dont see how it can hurt tho.

try catching everything out of your oil filter next time you change it... kinda surprising what you find.

I think that one point is to keep it out of circulation, not whether or not it is removed during an oil change. Also, as I mentioned before, you can use this as a kind of internal diagnostic.

That doesn't surprise me at all... if you monitor the oil you pour from a normal oil change carefully, you'll generally notice a VERY small amount of extremely small metal filings in the bottom of the drain pan.

Before anyone tells me there's something wrong with that, I've been doing my own oil and noticing this on my 212k mile vehicle for the last 8 years... so you're full of it if you tell me there's a problem with that car!

I'll tell what, you are so full of yourself you've missed the point of the discussion, Welcome to the TheLegendOfSpeeD fan club . For review, small amounts of metal in the oil is normal at changes and mostly drains out. The theory goes that the metal shavings are not smooth and the MDP removes them from circulation before your next change, keeping the oil fresher. So small amounts of metal on the MDP at changes is expected and normal. A large gob of fine particles or any larger chipped pieces of metal would be a sign of worn or damaged internals and would be use full information at least.

I don't think I missed the point at all nor did I think I was being all that full of myself. I was noting that I'm not surprised that the magnetic plug was picking things up because during oil changes because I do see a small amount of metal and always have, without consequence to what is now a reasonably long life motor.

My point was that this is normal and to be expected, therefore, a magnetic drain plug isn't an unreasonable idea. I only chimed in to contrast against the folks dismissing the MDP as useless.

hallo again. Jkurl, you're upsidedown. Antik is in favor and he is pointing out that the quote from that blog is just someone's opinion, and that Antik's observations contrast that blog 180 degrees.

actually I'm all over the place besides I used sarcastic blue, Antic is'nt really in the fan club. I guess I took his post to mean we were saying that metal like he sees is a problem, which it's not and we all agree, yeah!

I'm just gonna pull the "to each his own" card. For the record, I used the MDP for the Legend for 4 years. I also used one in my GSX, which, was a BRAND NEW BUILT MOTOR from FFWD Connection, their amazing! There was more metal in the first couple oil changes than the 201k mile motor in the Legend ever had. Just for reference heres a link to their site:

TheLegendOfSpeeD - please stay out of my thread, since you can't keep it civil. You're behaving as if someone who doesn't believe a blog you linked us to is personally insulting you. Get over yourself, and get outta here.
