new rotors from IROTORS making odd noise!

All,
I have emailed Elvis from irotors about this odd noise i have ever since i installed my new crossed drilled and slotted rotors and metal master brake pads from him. This is what i wrote:

Elvis, I have an question for you.. there is a kind of a funny noise (kind of like a whizzing/ clicking noise, when i brake) i am getting after i put in my new rotors and pads that i just bought from you... the best way to describe this noise is when you ride a bicycle and then you place a popsicle stick or a playing card in your spokes.. (like when you were a kid) it makes funny fluttering noise... i have driven over 500 miles now on them, slowly breaking them in... and i thought the noise would have gone away.. They have not gone away and the noise is still there.

He responded back stating that this noise is normal...

i dont know what to do.. i used brake quiet on ALL the shimms and still it makes the noise... My guess is it is not the pads.. but maybe the rotors.. or the combo of the two? Anyone that can shed some light.. it would be really helpful.. I am pulling my hair out here...

So my question to anyone else on this board is.. Is this REALLY normal? It is not that loud, but it is noticable when driving somewhere where it can echo... Also, who else bought the same setup from irotors.. and are you having the same issues?

Please let me know, i want to provide some feedback to elvis if this is the case...

thanks
eric

It's normal ... it's the rotors chewing up your pads like a cheese grater

Seriously, it's the holes and slots that are making the noise. Mine does the same.

Is this noise happening when you drive, or only when you apply the brake? If it happens while you drive, that is NOT normal ... sticking calliper?

Hmmm ... it definitly sounds like you're dragging a calliper, or something. You should get your brakes checked out. Most places do that for free (just don't let them do any work!)

Here's my experience: I changed out my rotors with dimpled drilled/slotted rotors and EBC GreenStuff pads. Since the rotors and pads are new, the thickness of the combined pad and rotor was much greater than what was on there prior to new installation. I had to fore go the front shims cause of the thickness. Even though I'm using the EBC and your using the axxis, the result is still the same. The pads are still touching the rotors. I also get like a swirling noise. I think after a 1000 miles or so they should be okay.

I have the EBC Greenstuff and dimpled\ slotted rotors and it's just the nature of the beast. Mine made that sound with OEM pads and the Greenstuff. I have heard it from all kinds of other dimpled\ slotted rotor users too.

thanks for the reply guys... I feel a bit better that i am not alone.. however is there any real solution to this? I have all my shims on the front and rears.. do i just have to wait till the pads wear down a bit more? its going on about 700 miles now. and still kinda loud.. should i pull off all my shims on the pads? and run without them? will this help?

one thing that i did notice was that i had pulled out one of the shims all the way around and then the noise was a little less, and when i put them all back on,, the noise was constant and a bit louder... that is why i ask is it good to run with NO shims?

thanks
eric

Everything you have described is normal. Don't worry, those noise are the exact same in my car. Your calipers are not dragging.

Same here...I guess its just normal.

When I brake hard, from like 60 to like 10-15 ...I get this wheezing sound....kinda like an aircraft engine shutting off..... I got it all checked out..and there was no problem. So I just let it be...nowadays I don't hear it that often. I guess these things just disappear on their own. More you use it..the better it gets.

However, I do get a very faint chirping (playing card in your spokes) noise now and then...that can be heard only when theres no music and all four windows are down.

But like someone said earlier, the brake related noise is just performance brakes doing their work

Best solution: Put the windows up and turn the music on loud

This may be a dumb reply however

Would it be safe to assume the direction of the slots causes this noise? If so, would swaping the rotors (to the other side) reduce noise w/o affecting the integrity of stopping power?

That sounds right if you have directional slots, the ones I purchased from race concepts were dimpled drilled, non directional slots.

thanks for the reply guys, however i heard it does matter what direction you install your directional slotted and crossdriled rotors.. anyhow.. i guess there is no other option but to leave it be... this kinda sucks

thanks

Okay, I just got off the phone with Brembo 1-800-325-3994 and with all of thier R&D the rotors they produce that have directional slots are with the slotts attacking the front. Plain and Simple, short and sweet - according to Brembo's R&D it does matter, however, I have seen them installed in both directions.
