Rough Shifting

I have a 92 LS with my tranny rebuilt about 15,000 miles ago. It seems to be shifting a little hard. What can I do to smooth that out. Would a tranny tune up or fluid change help that out? Thanks.

Is there a way to tell if you need to change your transmission fluid since I have no service records? I read that red means it is good and brown is bad. Is this accurate?

When i first bought my car 12k miles ago. I thought i would need another tranny. The tranny made a very loud roaring noise and slipped when i turned a corner. The body and interior was so nice i had to have it. At the time, i was a honda tech for a local dealership. So i was aware of the problems with honda/acura auto trannies especially V6 trannies. All honda/acura trannies should have their fluid ( app. 3 qts. drain and fill ) every other oil change IMO. The factory stated every 15k miles. Anyway, After performing this cleaning service and cleaning the solenoids, my car has ran smooth and quiet every since. I even installed a trans cooler on it but i dont think it was necessary. The more miles you have, the more often you should drain and fill. If you do this, IMO, you should have a trouble free trans that will last as long as the engine. Believe it, or Not!

Thanks.

All I need to do is find the right opening, tools, fluids, and time.

Flushing the old ATF is a good idea, but what's the point if you don't replace the filter/strainer attached to the valvebody. I would think this piece is a critical part of the process.

i have a bit of a problem with this.... you never EVER put the wrong transmission fluid in. its just something not to do. i'm no transmission expert by any means, but i myself would rather spend the extra money to buy 7 quarts of honda fluid and do a drain and refill and then take off the transmission cooler hose and do a "self flush" and let the transmission flush it self and all with the correct fluid. it wouldnt cost a lot more considering you only need 7 quarts instead of 14 or whatever this DIY says. and it would be less time consuming

just my 2 cents

i should've stated in my original post that i am no transmission expert myself nor do i know the reprocussions of anything stated, i just know one simple principle.

btw i got this idea from my dad who is a ASE certified mechanic for 25+ years, FYI.

considering the DIY is using ATF i would say no. whether or not that same idea of a 4x flush would be kosher or not, i'm not too sure myself.

H23Nutcase,
Agreed.

I did the 4x flush prior to replacing my filter. The reason was that I thought I could get away without replacing my filter by doing a 4x flush. The 4x flush was simply a waste of money and time, for me at least. A month after I did the 4x flush, I had the dealer do a flush for me with a pressurized transmission flushing machine. Also a waste of money as it did not solve my rough shifting problem.

The 4x flush AND the machine flush did nothing for me compared to when I dropped the pan and removed the filter to let the transmission fluid drip overnight with the filter removed. By simply allowing the transmission to drip with the filter removed, and replacing the filter after, I completely eliminated the rough shifting problem.

Manual Trans Servicing

NO RJ, NOT AT ALL !! Your manual Legend Trans. uses SAE 30 or 40 weight engine oil, not ATF !! The best thing to do for a manual trans Legend is do a warm drain, (meaning drain the trans. fluid after running around town & the fluids are warm/slightly hot), then drop in fresh oil, drive around for a bit again, drain & refill - that's it. I am going to check with Honda/Acura this week to see if we can use a high detergent motor oil for the first fill, to clean out the insides a bit, then go back to the required Honda Oil on the last/final fill. Will kepp y'all posted when I find out.
BUT,... NEVER USE ATF IN A MANUAL TRANS!! Very different viscosities and purposes ok !!??
