DIY Pics: Blower Unit Removal
Abtout a week ago I replaced my Blower motor and unit with a new one I bought from a forum member. Everything works well now.
I didn't take pictures through the whole process but hopefully these will still be helpful to people doing this themself. my new blower unit. removing the glovebox frame remove these screws on the side to get the frame out. where the cabin filter is (my 1991 didnt have one) blower half out unit is out, unplugging connections thats all of the pics i took. sorry i dont have any pics of putting everything back together. the sun was going down and we were losing sunlight so i was in a hurry. its pretty easy, just remember where all of the wire harnesses and screws go! Keep track of them and label everything. There are instructions HERE Special Thanks to Tinkindling for letting us use his garage and tools and for all of the advice and tips!

To add to this, I took all the foam parts and replaced it ALL with brand new Automotive Weather stripping from Lowe's, even the doors. I also took a 3M filter (only lasts 3 mo. it says but oh well, I'm not changing that thing for another 3 years) and modled it where a filter for my 91 should be, It worked excellently and everything is airtight now.

Blower Unit Replacement
Thanks for your detail procedures on removal. I have a problem maybe you can assist. Last week 16 Aug 04 my Legend AC blower was blowing very weak but the car was getting cold after driving for 15 min. Later in the week the blower completely stopped. I installed a new blower today it works great, but it is blowing hot air. I checked the condensor it is operating as before, I checked the AC tubing under the hood it is getting wet and cold, the controls are operating properly...what is it that I'm overlooking? Please advise.

Bet he got the plug for the trunk release and the climate control module reversed. If he did, the control module gets fried and all it spits out is hot air. Made that mistake once as the 2 plugs are similar and fairly close to each other. To keep that from happening, mark the plugs with different colored markers.

Thanks for you great DIY instructions. Here is my experience with this for all those who have a weak blower.
Symptoms: fan workes intermittantly and very slowly when it did, could get it to move by banging near the glove compartment area (like the Fonze) Removal: much easier than changing the cv joints on my car, less messy and the actual blower is plastic so its not to heavy when installing/removing. 10mm socket, 8mm socket and phillips screw driver is all you need. What I found: Yes, twigs, leaves and feathers in the cabin filter... I wish they installed a filter upstream to the blower so all that stuff would not get into such a hard to get place. I opened up the blower and removed the motor. Motor was jam packed with carbon residue, since there are no open breathing holes for the motor. I cleaned all that out. I also noticed that after 150k miles and 12 year that there was only about 5mm left of the motor brushes, i could start seeing the spring on one brush ( brushes did not look like anything special, you should be able to find them somewhere). I put some grease on shaft and put it back together. Result: Blower works just like it did 5 years ago just fine Lessons: before buying a whole new blower, consider just taking a look at the motor and cleaning out the carbon and checking the brushes. Thanks |

DIY Heater Blower Motor Brush Repair
I had an intermittent squeaky heater motor for about two years and it
completely stopped working a few months ago. I took it apart today and applied 12 volts directly to the motor and it still didn't run. Since it's pretty costly to replace (about $250 online, $300 part only at a dealer) I went a little further and took the fans off the blower motor (used a small gear puller and just pulled hard by hand) and took the motor apart (Philips screwdriver). It was really dirty and one of the motor brushes was gone, completely worn away. The squeaking was probably the spring scraping the copper commutator. As soon as I can solder in a couple new brushes, I think it will be fixed. ![]() ![]() ![]() An overview on replacing brushes in an electric motor: http://www.atving.com/atvconnection/...ech-Tip-28.cfm Update: I soldered in two replacement brushes and put 12 volts to the motor and it works! The motor costs $300+ at a dealer without labor. The two replacement brushes cost me $3.50 for the set! You'll have to find an auto electric repair shop or other electric motor repair shop to find replacement brushes. Take this DIY job one level further and save yourself a lot of cash! My A/C stopped working so I took it to the dealer to have it checked out. They wanted $700+ parts and labor!!! Bad blower motor. I found the blower brand new on ebay for under a hundred, followed the great DIY, and finished the job in less than three hours considering i had to splice some wires! I saved myself $600+ and i instaled a filter wich i did not have. I love this fourm!!!!!!!!!! Thanks to everone involved in this DIY! This is what "acura-legend.com" is all about!!!!!!!!
