DIY: Remote start/ Tilt steering

OK as many of you know when you add a remote starter you will loose your electronic tilt, that is if you have a 94.95. It seems that noone or few has sucessfully repaired this problem and i searched and searched finding only a crappy fax that attempted to fix the problem in an excessively complicated way. So after attempting to fix this problem at least 15 times i finally have it working. So here it goes

1.) locate a 12v relay, im sure whoever is planning to atempt this knows where to get one. or any local install shop will have one if you print this DIY out to give to them.

2.) Take off the dash pannel and locate a black and a blue/white wire incases in a plastic sleeve located right under the ignition. Thouse two wires control the tilt switch that actives the steering wheel to move upon insertion of the key.

3.) your gonna cut both thouse wires because you will totally be bypassing the switch, strip both the wires on the side going away from the ignition having them ready to hook up tp the relay.

4.) Next you gonna need to locate the installation manual for your alarm. Your looking for the (+) output to accessory circuit wire, this is usually a heavy guage wire, on my alarm it was orange (clifford matrix rs3.5). You are going to be tapping into this wire so dont cut it.

PS: if you dont have your installation manual go to www.directed.com and click guides and you can select your alarm make from all of DEi's alarms.

5.) Now that i've helped you locate all the needed wires, this diagram below should be more then enough information to bring your tilt steering wheel back to life. It will function normal with or without the car being remote started.

--remember once everything is installed to disconnect your battery for a few seconds so your tilt memory resets.

Good work Roger,just did this mod and man it works like a charm. Just to let you guys know that this bypassing actually works better than stock cuz' it activates not when you put ur key in but when you turn the ignition and turn off the ignition so when you try to get out of the car after you park, you don't have to wait for the wheel to go back up like after you pull out the key,it goes right up when you shut your car off.

but yeah this fix is a MUST....cant live without it!

but your steering wheel still tilts when you auto starts right? Some one actually was able to get the steering wheel not to tilt when auto start untill you put the key in. I have that setip already, but i want the one with out the tile on auto start. --=Keith

im not sure you can do that because if the car is started and the steering wheel hasent tilted yet then it will erease the memory for your steering wheel

Hi,
I just curious about your shift knob that you use ,MDX wood shift knob. Is it the Acura MDX shift knob?
If it does, do you modify anything or it can be fit to Acura Legend?

I brought it in to Circuit City yesterday and it was the difference between me losing the memory function w/ my new remote start.

Does anyone think there might be a way to wire the tilt wheel so that it goes up when the driver door is open, and down when the driver door is closed??

This way it wouldn't matter if the car has auto-started or not.

hey that's a good question. I don't even have a power steering column because my car is a 91' but i hope to convert it sometime in the future. I was thinking of what you asked and kind of came up with a preliminary answer, but don't know if it would work. You see how you have two memory buttons for your seat and steering wheel. Let's say you acquire a second one of these and wire it along with your current system (you might need to put diods on both units so the don't interfere with each other), now instead of having this second unit operate by pressing the button, have it operate utilizing the door switch. So lets say number 1 is wired to when you open the door and is set to have the wheel move up and the seat slide back; then number two you have it wired when the door is closed to lower the steering wheel and slide thew seat forward some. This, if it could work, will take a lot of costumization the way I see it. There might be an easier way that I don't know about or thought of. You might be able to get a part off another Acura (maybe a TL) or some other Honda and retofit it. If you could get this done somehow I'm sure alot of people would be interested in it. I know I would.
