A little bit off topic but my transmission has the hard shifts as well as some slippage. So I decided to disconnect the battery for a few minutes to reset the ECU. Voila, my car is not slipping anymore but still has hard shifts. Will still drop the pan when my order arrives though.

With the pan off, I let the transmission drain overnight. A little more than 4liter drained out. I filled it back up with 3.6L of fluid. Transmission shifts smoother, 1st to 2nd shift is still rough, but much more tolerable. Car accelerates a lot smoother and quicker because of the new fluid and possibly because there's less drag on the tranny pump. I noticed that some of the slipping is gone. Shifting becomes much quicker as well. The most noticible difference is the shift between 2nd and 3rd. It's seamless.

For my car, the filter replacement has completely eliminated the rough shift my car had. I let my transmission drip over night with the filter and pan removed. No amount of flushing improved my transmission rough shift problem. But the filter replacement eliminated it. The car also accelerated much smoother now too because the transmission pump operates smoother. Idle is also smoother when it is in the D4 position. The car feels like new again.

how long did this take you? and about how long would someone who has never done it take? (since you said you do it almost every oil change)

I could have done it in under an hour. But because I was given the wrong pan gasket, I took an extra day which I left the transmission to drip. The key is to remove the filter to drain the dirty fluid out.

You can safely unscrew all of them because the pan is fairly secured

say i dont want to replace the filter, and i just want drain and refill. will it still be a good idea to not replace the filter until my next tune up ? right now i am tight on budget, really tight. but i might have enough for the honda ATF.

It's all 10MM except for the drain plug... 3/8 rachet will remove that...

Do a drain and refill. Do NOT perform a tranny power flush.

I think the dealer is the best bet for the tranny filter/strainer. I haven't found one at the local part stores.

One dealer told me that the strainer is not replaceable unless you are rebuilding the tranny, so I walked out without arguing further.

You need P/N 25420-PY4-000 (strainer, #1 in pic) and 91308-PA9-003 (O-Ring, #21 in pic).

which way does the trans. plug (bolt) open? I tried anti-clockwise (looking right at it) and the thing would not budge, I even sprayed WD-40 and still nothing? While Im on the topic, Doing my own oil change for the first time, i couldnt get the oil pan bolt of either, looks like its smoothed out, does that open anti-clockwise as well?

Ive done oil change on my corolla and its always anti-clockwise
