I purchased a tranny kit for my RL from rockauto.com for $25. That included the filter o-ring, gasket, and filter. Great DIY, this combined with the 4x tranny flush is like having a brand new transmission. Props!!

I just drain and filled mine, I think I'll go 5-10k then do the whole nine. The car seems to shift a little smoother with the fresh fluid.

I did noticed the drain plug caked up with metal shavings that makes me a little nervous...

Thanks for this post. It's very informative. My tranny is kinda slipping when it shifts from 3rd to 4th. A friend with a totally different car said that his did the same thing and when he had it serviced it went away. Has anyone had this problem?

21813-P5H-000 (95)
21813-PY4-000 (91-94)

Might be wise to confirm your part # via VIN #, the number may have been changed sometime during 94.

Not sure if it makes a difference but that part reads as a 95 Legend. Looking up a 92 I get a different part number

I just ordered the parts listed above for my 1994 Legend. It netted a little over $100 Canadian before tax.

I am suspecting my filter is very dirty because my car had be fine until it sat for two weeks during a head gasket replacement (preventative maintenance). I assumed the particles sunk to the bottom. After the head gasket repair, smoke came out of the fluid, possibly cauesd by a pump over working. Flushing solved the fluid over heating problem. All this was more than two years ago, during which the transmission had been flushed twice with a few drains every now and then. Shift shock is acceptable, but annoying. I hope the transmission filter will solve the problem.

Yeah it looks like there are 2 listed now that you mention it. P5H and PY4. It would be wise for people to check for themselves via their VIN numbers but it appears that 91-94 uses PY4 and 95 uses P5H.

there is a trick to flushing your trans fluid...

after you drop pan and put new filter in and put new fluid in.

take of the trans line from the radiator cooler that leads back to trans start vehicle in park and hold line to an empty gallon jug and it will fill with the leftover old fluid...when you start seeing fresh red fluid of air shut car off and repeat another time after you fill it up again with new fluid. AFter second time hook line back up...fill up trans at idle in park and make sure at proper level.

good luck

I dropped the transmission oil pan today. There is not a speck of metal debris inside the transmission or on the drain plug. The transmission is immaculate inside and the transmission fluid is clean. I flush the transmission once a year and the last time I flushed it was 8 months ago. The filter seems a little dirty, but the fluid is clean. No debris whatsoever.

Now I am not sure if changing the filter will solve my 1st-2nd rough shifting problem considering my transmission is clean, with no sign of excessive wear. The filter itself is old, but not clogged to the point it will affect shifting.

The dealer has given me the wrong oil pan gasket, so I am leaving my transmission to drip from the valvebody for a couple of days. This should allow me to fill more new fluid into the transmission. I hope by changing the filter and draining the fluid, the rough shifting will be fixed somewhat.
