The DEI unit is a window control module for DEI alarm systems. You can get it at any DEI dealer.

but is it needed to make this work? I mean I have factory keyless/alarm bs thingy. So do I need to get that unit to tilt my sunroof?

No, it's not needed to get the moonroof to tilt. It's a convenience to allow for one-touch closing.

o lol well one touch closing no big deal i dont mind holding a button for a few seconds if it saves removing my headliner again and adding a DEI unit. I thought it was like one of those fancy "if it senses rain it closes" things then i might add it. but hell this has a stopping point before it tilts right? like if u hold the close button it will go flat then like a second later it will lift the rear. or is it like u have to time it perfectly to close 100%

There is a rather short pause as the mechanism transitions, but you do kinda have to time it. You will probably get used to it after a while.

Yea, it took me a couple of weeks to get familiar with the sound of the roof closing..... to get it right every time.

The first two weeks, I would have to stick my hand out the window and touch the glass to see if it was closed correctly.

Well I guess I'm gonna try this one, it looks pretty sweet too! I'm gonna wait till dusk though the sun in NC is f'ing HOT right now! I spent a couple hours yesterday replacing my friends cap, rotor, plug wires, and sparkplugs on his 86' 325. We're both covered in a sunburn!

later,

Alright that mod is sweet, I did it earlier before I left for dinner (Carolina Ale house). It really wasnt that hard, maybe an hour of time. I couldn't figure out that part where you move the stopper at first but after that things went smooth!!! Great DIY!

Score another one for the LegendGS/MikeC DIY! Just got done. I must say, every step was there and the directions were straight forward. I got some grime on the felt around the roof opening, but that came off without too much problem. And I only smacked my forehead against the tilt bracket once when the glass was out. Good thing I'm short, I curled up in there and sat on the console Now I'm gonna go drive it. I also shaved the "Acura" off the trunk while I was out there, it was threatening to fall off any way .
