1989 L Coupe has alotta rust... do bodywork then sell... or just sell?

I am sure some of you have come to a point when you have a car that you love, but you need to put it down or sell it. The engine is still very good on the car... My dilemma is it has lots of rust. Should I sell it or do some light bodywork, then sell it at a higher price? (I would have to hire a bodyshop)

I love my 1989 L Coupe, but it has major rust in the following areas:

-around the wheel wells (rust has eaten right through)
-around the windshields (it has bulges)
-around the edges of the trunk, it has bulges as well

Should I even bother doing some minor bodywork so it sells better. Basically, would I be able to get my money back on light bodywork? What do you think... any opinion would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Well, I'm in the same predicament as you. I put a ton of money into my engine and tranny so I am going to do the repairs to my rust spots as long as my car keeps going strong. The problem I have is making the repair look decent(as in getting a good paint finish) when I'm done repairing the rust spots. If you really like your car and it seems in good mechanical condition the I would keep it. If you want to sell it, then I wouldn't repair it cause the person buying it may have better skills in repairing rust then you do. Just a thought.

Typically when you sell a car, you never get back what you put into it. I recommend just selling it as-is. I doubt you'll ever got back what the body shop is going to charge you.

If you're going to do bodywork, why not just keep it?

xtcrush...sounds exactly like my car......I replaced my trunk lid last year on my '90 LS as the lip rusted with one from an '88 and it came out great ! I just had my car painted and the rust spots fixed as you described...on top of both sides of the front windshield, the gas tank filler area, and the rear wheel wells. Also replaced the filler piece between the rear bumper and trunk as it had rusted also ( $ 72 for the part )...and a total repaint for $ 2100. As with yours the engine runs great....an I just redid the leather, Bose system, oil pump, water pump....etc.......as I have no intention of getting rid of mine. Good luck whatever way you choose !

Thanks guys

I'll check a bodyshop for quotes on fixing up the body... and I'll post the price here.

And if anyone knows of a boneyard in the Toronto area with a 1st Gen Legend Coupe, please let me know!

I know the tires have to be changed soon costing about 300$, so I don't think I want to have more expenses for this car.

I just had a quote done on my 90 L coupe. I have a small amount of rust in the gas door, and by the wheel well, little spot in the trunk lid, and below it on the body, someone has already tried to fix the spot on the passenger side pillar, and some in the front wheel well. $1,452.88 Canadian dollor, taxes in.

Well, the only way to fix rust is the cut it out and weld new sheet metal then bondo it. If the $1,452.88 includes this method of repair get it done. If not you're just gonna see rust pop up in a year or two in the exact same spots that were repaired and that will piss anyone off especially if you get a nice paint job.

You say the spot below the trunk lid on the body...if it's the filler piece between the trunk lid and bumper; replace the whole piece. $ 72 US and once your shop takes the old one off...you'll see all the rust it had underneath.
