codes

me again. driving down the road the other day and my check engine light came on. so i checked the codes and it flashed 12x meaning egr valve. the car when it gets warm dosent idol worth a damn. it just keeps flooding. now i checked at start up and she blows a bit black and the exhaust tip is black so i know that she is running rich. also my gas mileage isent that great. i tried to disconnect the egr but that didnt solve the problem. could it be a bad o2 senser on the exhaust or intake?

Try this, it's something my boss says how he runs his car. Disconnect both O2 sensors and try it like that. Let us know.

Don't disconnect the O2 sensors, that is a short term solution at the very best. Diagnose and repair the EGR problem first and that may cure the rich running problem. Once the EGR problem is fixed, clear the codes out of the system and drive the car. If there is a problem with the O2 sensors it will then set a code 1 and/or a code 2.

Aside from the environmental concerns, disconnecting the O2 sensors in a modern engine is a bad thing. They need them to calculate air-fuel mixture and, if you live in a state with a smog check program it won't pass without them or with the check engine light on which it will be without them. Fix it right or it will cost you considerably more later on.

Warm up the engine, and reach down under the EGR valve while you rev it up. Does the diaphram move? Let it idle, then push up on the diaphram.....does your idle speed decrease? If neither of the above happens, you have valve problems or passage clogging. You can also put some vacuum on the EGR valve diaphram at idle and see what happens.
