This is an installation DIY for the Ford Taurus Cupholder/cointray. (The video DIY is located at the end of this post).

You can get this unit from any 90s era Ford Taurus.

This installation is not too difficult and requires a minimal amount of modification to the radio console and the cupholder unit itself.

Tools Needed:
~Phillips Screwdriver
~Slotted Screwdriver
~Files/rasps of differing roughness
~Hacksaw blade
~Dremel Tool with sanding bit (optional, but recommended)

The first thing you have to do is remove the radio and its surrounding console. After removing them from the car, remove the radio and mounting bracket from the console. You will not be reusing the mounting bracket.




Next you’ll have to start modifying the cupholder/cointray unit. As you can see in the picture below, the unit is a bit too wide and too tall to perfectly fit in the stereo cutout.




You will also have to completely cut off these pieces with a hacksaw blade as they will take up space and get in the way behind the radio.




You will then have to file/sand down these edges of the unit.



Do a little bit at a time and most importantly TAKE YOUR TIME with it so that it comes out looking nice and neat. Keep checking the fitment until the unit fits into the console nice and snug.





Now that the unit fits, it still might be a bit too tall to fit a DIN sized stereo. You can either choose to continue trimming away at the top and bottom of the unit, OR you could trim away at these areas on the console itself to allow for a bit more room.



I would recommend doing this so as not to trim away too much of the unit’s top and bottom, giving it a weird, uneven look. Also, just for the record, after trimming away at these parts, I put a factory stereo back in and it still fit perfectly with no ill effects from the trimming, so this mod IS reversible should you decide to go back to stock someday.

Anyhow…once you have the unit and console trimmed down to allow for fitment of both the cupholder/cointray and a stereo mounting cage, be sure that both pieces fit nice and snug, but be sure that they do not have so much pressure that it is exerting a huge amount of force onto the headunit (as this can cause problems for the HU) or downward onto the cupholders (as too much pressure can prevent the trays from opening).




Once you have everything finished and working properly, simply reinstall the console into the car. Since you have eliminated the factory-mounting bracket, it is important that you either make another one (very easy to do and the possibilities on how to do this are endless) or make your setup fit snug enough that they can simply mount into the car as they are. I would highly recommend the former as it is very easy to do, and if you prefer, you can also use this opportunity to make a bracket to prevent the theft of your stereo. Either way its up to you!

Very nicely done man. Are drinks pretty stable in the holders? I know I'm nervous about putting one in my OEM holder (G2 sedan) because it wobbles and almost tips over.

It's odd how Ford made the holders curve in rather than provide a flush face, but you could use a bit of foam or plastic and cover them with a veneer (leaving room for the buttons) and it'd look slick.

Way to contribute to the DIY section.

I've always seen these on Ebay for $20-$30. If you can find them at junkyards you can get them there too...

I was selling them for $20 + shipping but (if you check out the link in my sig) I was willing to trim them too but didnt have any takers. Got two left if anyone's interested though

i would do this mod but i need something with a little more girth to it, something to fir the 40oz slurpees and my Dub G

you finally got rid of the dual HU? that new one doesnt look like a 9885, but i could be wrong?

Lol yeah man I ended up going with an older model in favor of the 4v preouts

Plus it came with the Ipod interface AND an Ipod mini...it was just too good of a deal It works great though! There was a spot in the vid where I showed it off but I had to cut it to keep the video under 10 minutes
