Help Version 2

Hey all again. I got a boat load of things going wrong and they are happening one after another. Any tips, help, advise, DIY's will be appreciated.

1. Something is wrong with my speedo cable where my speedometer doesn't work, cruise controll, S3 light keeps blinking, my odometer doesn't work, and check engine light will pop on if i go over 70 (i guess my speed when driving)

2. When it gets too hot my car will not start, but when it gets too cold it won't shut off. The engine will shut off but unless i see the red light around the P on the dash the key won't come out.

3. when it rains water pools up like under my roof but above the upholstery in the car on the roof. so when i brake i get pools of water pooring down on me even though the sunroof was closed.

I have a 1990 Acura Legend. 4sp Automatic with the Sport shift thing. 4 Door LS.

Any tips or anything will be great. Thank You +D

1. Sounds like your speedometer cable is broken, and you should check the ECU and TCU for any codes

2.No start when too hot is typically a Main Relay needing repair/replacement; the other problem sounds like your tranny is not going completely into park for whatever reason...hence not being able to remove the key unless the P light comes on...

3. Your sunroof drains are clogged...clean em out and that should solve your problem...

All of these problems can be found with a trip to the G1 FAQ sticky and a search...

1) if speedo cable isnt broken, it might be the VSS (speed sensor); that is, if the G1 had that installed, same problem the accord had
2) def main relay for the hot issue, but the other is called the neutral switch relay/sensor (i believe) it has to do with the shifter not going all the way into park, thus you cant remove the key. you can pull apart the console first and see if something is blocking the shifter from sliding all the way into park, if nothing, then look into that sensor. some times it helps if its not letting teh key go to slide the shifter from 2 gear to park a couple of times (with the car off of course) and see if it releases the key then.
3) again, i agree with gabe, you need to clean out the drain plugs for your sunroof.

1.)i checked the DIY's and saw a section about cleaning the speedo cable. I got my WD-40 and some spray greese stuff and i did all the steps. Removing the nut between the 2 sections of the cable near the brake lines in the engine compartment, cleaning, re greasing the male and female ends of the cable. i got it to work for 2 miles down a back road that i used to test it, but when i turned around, putting the car into reverse and then driving back it stopped working. BIG F bombs were dropped and i almost went nuts..

so to check if the cord snapped i pulled out the metal coiled part of the upper cable and everything was fine.. put it back in. and sense i could not for the life of me get the lower section out of the tranny or whatever its plugged into i tried spinning the cable (the female end) to see if it was broken/snapped..i twisted it and then it flipped back when i let go .. so to me that means nothing is broken right?

i checked behind the instrument panel and everything was good there...

what could be wrong with this thing?

And how do you check TCU and ECU codes?

2.) where is the main relay and how much would it be to replace it if i did it myself? and it goes into park, during the summer i never have the problem. only when its cold. its just not reading it or whatever. I shake the shifter for like 10 mins and then the red light will blink a lil bit then tiny movements and once i see it i shut the car off quick.

3.) where are the drain plugs and how many of them are there?

Sorry for all the questions but i don't have a lot of money or i would take it in so i do a lot of the stuff by myself. I know a decent amount about cars just not specific details. More of a general braod knowledge.

Thanks for the helps guys and girls and please respond if you know anything that would help me out.

Thank you

1) couldnt tell you why it would work until you reversed, very odd. maybe you should check for codes (you would know if you have a TCU code because the S3 light would be blinking), but anywho, the ECU is either under the passenger footwell (coupe) or under the driver(?) seat (sedan). the TCU is under the passenger seat (i believe in both). for either, you simply have to expose the view window. in the case of the coupe ECU, you simply pull back the carpet (from the top) until you see a small window; the TCU you flip a panel (from the rear) and you will see a red blinking light, and if the sedan's ECU is the same as the TCU, it will be under a small plastic panel from the rear as well. in both cases you simply have to count the number of times the light blinks and then report back.

2) the main relay is about $50 for a new one, from auto zone, or other, and i believe that all hondas from '85-90 used the same one (all models acura and honda), dont quote me on that. if you dont feel like forking out $50 and feel confident in soldering skills, someone posted a pretty nice DIY for resoldering the old main relay. its either in the DIY section, or in the G2 section, just do a general search of the forum for "main relay repair" and you should find it. you can also just search google and people have the same things, DIY repairs.

3) the drain plugs for the sunroof are located at each corner (not easy to get to the rears unless you remove the glass, and i believe they each drain into the wheel well areas (but the rears might just drain to the trunk drain area). just look for small tubes and then blow some compressed air and it should clean it out, if not, it might take some real work since they might be dried out crap in there.

its alright to ask questions, we are all here to learn more about a great car that we all love. most people on this site are here simply because they too dont have money to take the car into a shop for every minor thing, so we help each other out. stick around long enough, and you will learn quite a lot about the car, even if you arent doing the repairs yourself.

if i remember correctly, you can put the key in and start it in neutral, but the car needs to be engaged in park in order to release the key.

Like Ikeray said, the drains are in each corner. The front ones are easy to get to and blow some air through them. If you don't have a compressor then it might clear by human power. The rear ones drain just behind the rear wheel wells in the trunk, you can find them by pulling back the lining on the sides of the trunk. There are small storage thingies that need to be removed too. Find the black hoses and the ends will pull off. They are usually plugged with dirt and leaves. They have a conical shape with slits in them, lets the water out and keeps the wasps and bees out as well.
That should keep you dry...................

thanks much for the tips. I will try the drain plug thing tomorrow. or today forgot it was 3 am haha.

Does anyone know a easier way to get the speedo cable pulled out of the transmission in the engine compartment? And when i put it back in does it have to be aligned in a certain way? i tried going under car but there was no way. I tried from above reaching around and through the brake and i think gas lines but there was no luck. i was tugging hard as i could but i didn't know if i was going to break something or if there was a clip?

and does anyone have the link for the ECU and TCU code page? I found it once for both and it had them both on the same page but i could never find them again.

Thanks for the help guys and gals.. Appreciate it
