How do you tell if fuel evap canister is bad?

I have an '89 Legend Coupe, and I have already did a search for the "fuel evap" canister in all the past forums, and could not find the answer anywhere to this: If your fuel evap canister is bad, how can you tell? I took mine out for inspection, and I don't smell anything, and I shook it up and down, and heard the charcoal loose in the inside. Mine does not have any cracks in it or anything, so does that mean it is good? Lastly, WHAT is the hose in the bottom center of the can suppossed to be connected to? I have looked everywhere down in there around the engine bay, and can't find what is connects to. The OTHER three hoses on top of the can are connected all to what they are suppossed to be connected to. I am stil trying to pass CA smog here in L.A., and am wondering if a bad evap canister would cause me not to pass smog. Thanks.

Our Legends have an extensive gas vapor recovery system which feeds unburnt fuel vapors back through the engine. It also has a collection and recovery system for raw fuel vapors from the gas tank, which extends all the way to the engine.

The canister you refer to is the tail end of the system, where whatever is finally left is ejected to atmosphere. The charcoal cannister scrubs it one last time before emitting it outside.

Charcoal doesn't go bad. The canister flow can become clogged or the contents contaminated, but generally not. And, less likely in this situation.

You sound like a solution in search of a problem.

This canister has nothing to do with emmissions testing at all. That is, unless they start testing the atmosphere around the outside of the car.

I think they pinch it off for the gas tank pressure test in CA...but that is the extent of the canister's inspection...

What are your numbers? In what areas are you failing?
