Unhappy How to tell if water pump is going bad?

Is there a way to tell if your water pump is going bad? My car started making a weird grinding type of noise today, and I really hope its not the water pump.
I know I should've gotten it changed with my timing belt, but I was stupid.

I found out the hard way. My car started overheatingout of nowhere one day on my way home from work, I thought the radiator cap was loose and ended up with burns on my arm(still have the scars)and got the car towed to my mechanic and found out it was water pump.

So, if your water pump goes bad, the engine will start to overheat?

Yes. If the waterpump goes bad, not water will be moved through the engine, and will not cool the engine properly.

If it starts leaking, then you will loose water (obviously), and that will cause overheating as well.

Ck. power steering oil level first. Take a wooden dowell rod or saw off a length of wood broom handle & hold it on the alternator, power steering pump, a. c. compressor, (,engine idleing),put your ear on the dowell & try to locate the noise, could be the belts whinning. If it's the water pump bearing going bad the w.p. seal will probably start leaking pretty soon, that will cause low water level & over heating, then you'll know. If it's an automatic ck. the fluid level.
