Ignition between 2 and 3

My daughter has an '89 G1 4dr. Last night she called and said her car started fine but when the key position went back to the 2 position, it died. The car would run fine if she kept the key between the 2 and 3 position. Has anyone had that problem before?

It sounds like an ignition switch problem. If you've got a multimeter you should be able to test the switch like they describe on this page of the service manual:

Update: one of my daughter's friends advised her to put the tranny in neutral and try to start the car. It worked! And now it starts normally. Good news but weird.

Wow, I'd have never guessed that. Glad to hear it's working with a work-around.

Problem happened again today so the "putting in Neutral" didn't work. Car at mechanic shop now. MTF.

Have them check the ignition first, it probably has a loose contact in there.

Final update (I hope). Repair shop found it to be a faulty ignition switch. Putting the car in neutral was just a fluck. Thanks for everyone's help.
