Ignition switch problems - key will not turn :(

My ignition switch key will not turn on my 1989 Acura Legend.

I have tried a number of suggestions:
1. the parking brake is on...no luck
2. I have tried put it in neutral with my foot on the brake...no luck
3. I have tried banging on the key a little...no luck
4. I have wiggled the steering wheel and the key and tried the spare key...no luck
5. I have sprayed some WD40...no luck
Any other ideas? Any thought on how likely it is that making a new key will help?

I am fairly mechanical and I am thinking about trying to replace the ignition switch myself. Has anyone done that successfully?

Thanks in advance for your help.

If your key is severely worn it can cause this. (get new key cut from Dealer) The next thing is to replace the ignition (not the electrical part, the cylinder.) Which means having two keys.

The car is an auto or a manual transmission?

If it is a manual - was it converted from an auto?

You are able to take the key out of the cylinder and put it back in, it is just that the cylinder won't turn - correct?

The car is an automatic and never was changed from manual.
Correct the key will not turn, but I can take it in and out easily.

I will try getting a new key cut. But it is weird because it did not go bad over time; just one day it stopped working altogether.

Sounds like the cylinder is damaged. Hopefully a new key will work, but if it doesn't, you'll need to replace the cylinder. See if the dealership can do that for you. i think you'll need to bring the pink slip with the VIN number to it.
