JDM Short Ram Intake

I just ordered a JDM Short Ram Intake for my 1990 Legend LS but I should have thought about asking you guys first....

Q1) Short Ram Intakes are different from Cold Air Intakes, those seem to be longer and go closer to the front of the car, so the advantage of the Short Ram is what compared to a Cold Air one?

Q2) I will remove the air filter and the top part of the air filter box... should the bottom of the air filter housing also be removed along with the original air ducts?

Q3) The Short Ram Intake doesn't require the battery moved... but should I move the battery anyway to the trunk?

Recently done coolant, brake fluid, new front brakes, right rear control arm, brake master cylinder replaced. Need new CV joints and boots (EXPENSIVE TO INTALLL!!!!)

Just an update please reply!!!

go with cold air intake. because regardless of what intake you have if its inside of the engine your getting hot air and thats bad... even worser than stock and dont move the battery its just extra work. Ive done both and cold air intake is better definitely. If you want a cold air intake then go to auto zone and buy the hoses where you can connect (2) intake pipes together then using it to direct it to another intake piping going into the hole where the battery is and put the filter under the fender. installing it is a no brainer youll figure it out if you need pictures I can post them when I get the chance. cv joints and boots are cheap and easy to install. do it yourself and dont waste money hiring someone.

Hey man, thank you for your reply, here's the item

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/86-87...ayphotohosting

This is what I ordered, JDM Short Ram Intake. I hear you about the cold air intake set up, do you think this can be used to set up the Cold Air System?? Like can I put this near the bottom grille and duct the rest to the manifold?

Should the duct pipes be plastic or aluminum like on this short ram intakes?

CV joints & boots, I can only get the whole CV Axle shaft with boots and joint for either side, $140 CAD each new from local auto parts store (if they manage to find any stock!) but Acura dealer wants $180 for install PER SIDE!

Also I have a K & N air filter in the regular housing, almost brand new.... what do I do with that once I put in a cold air system.....

Well if you have already ordered this your best bet is to attach the metal tube to the throttle body as intended and then get some rubber hose or something and duct it to where the resonator is (which you will have to remove). Then just sit your pod filter where the resonator used to be. The hardest part will be making two 45 degree turns to get the tube to where the resonator is.

It is pretty easy. Let us know how you go. Also the K & N you will have to sell because you will have no use for it.

your short intake looks just like mines... just go to any autozone and buy one of those ajustable plastic hoses from the intake sections (if they have it over there) and direct it to the resonator to make a cold air intake. about the cv and joints they are eating you. just order the cv boots and joints not the whole arm because they are like $10 a peice and not hard to install but dirty work. best is to checkout car quest or if you want the whole arm then checkout a salvage yard they cost like $25.00 for the whole arm.. with the right tools its easy. You live in Vancouver Washington right? If its too much headache for you then drive over to portland and Ill do it for you for $100.00 and Ill help you get the parts here with no taxes. But I recommend if you plan to stay with the legend long then learn to fix it and only hire someone when its beyond your hands because it will save you alot of money. $140+$180=$320 AND taxes... thats too much for replacing cv boots and joints. I can get new engine with that maybe even a jdm engine.

Thanks bro,

I actually cancelled the order for the short ram intake this morning, I figure a $10 one off e-bay won't do me much good, might get a K & N cone filter and make the intake myself, and direct it to the resonator like you said.

By the way what is the "resonator"? Is that under the air box?

CV joint and boots are a major problem, local autoparts store Lordco (huge chain) can't get seperate CV joints, only as a whole thing and ALL re-manufactured... except only one set might be new, those are the $140 ones. Together about $240+ 14% tax = $273.60 CAD

I'm not in a huge rush, cause my CV joints only started making noise a few months ago....but the part I can afford, however dealers in Canada charge $104/hour labour, a three hour job will run into the $350 range. I might attempt myself if only I knew what the hell I was supposed to be doing, I guess I will have to read the manual again and figure it out.

Hayne's manual = Death

Thank you for offering me to come down to your city for repair, I will handle things up here, since I work 18 hours a day anyway, road trips are not part of my schedule

CV Joint replacement

Call a few places and get quotes. Whenever I do i get 4 different prices and various choices of product brands and even remanufactured units. I can get them quoted down here in Toronto for $80.00 to almost $200.00 a pc. (after returning the dead ones for the rebate) CDN

Try to find one of those little automotive places here and there and keep away from Parts Source or Crappy tire.

Like the other dude said it's fairly easy to replace these as a unit. But it is nice to have a hoist to do this because you can shortcut some steps and squeeze the units in fast. (1/2 hour per side if your good).

resonator is the little plastic bottle under the driver side fender it connects with the stock intake. Do a search on CAI and you will find all the answers to making a cold air intake. Alot of people here have some pretty good ideas. But I do recommend that if your not sure what your doing just stay with stock intake. This is pretty much what a cold air intake does:

*little bit better gas mileage
*little bit more power
*engine sounds meaner
*better acceleration on high speed

besides that its not much. Just cost more effort and money to do it. About the CV's and Joints... try ordering online at carquest or autozone websites. I dont remember the adresses but you can find it. its real easy. they also has pictures to show you how to install it.
