Location of fuel pump?

The online manuals appear to down today, can anyone with expertise on the topic talk about changing a fuel pump on a 1987 Legend?

location?
troubleshooting the pump?
tools needed?

simple/difficult procedure?

cost? OEM vs aftermarket?

Is Wallbro good?

which fuel pump are you using?

Thanks

I have replaced it on a 90 Legend coupe. Assuming it's the same the following should apply.

When you turn on the ignition switch the check engine light should be on for about 2 seconds and during that time there should be voltage to the fuel pump. If the pump is working you should hear it run. If you don't hear it then either the pump is bad or it's not getting voltage.

The pump is located on top of the fuel tank and there is an access panel that you can remove in the trunk. If you disconnect the wiring connector you can check for voltage. If there is voltage and no sound from the pump the fuel pump is probably bad. Remove the screws and remove the pump/gauge assembly. The replacement pump needs to be wired in and connected via fuel hoses, which come with the pump.

I got my replacement from Carquest, which I believe is Airtech, and is OK.

Wow your right about the Online Manual!!

I'll check it out....but once it comes back up, I highly reccomend saving it to your hard drive...quick access and not subject to downtime...

some of us are not so lucky as others; I use public computers which are locked down for downloading to the hardrive; I am always on the road.

However, I am in the process of printing the entire manual, all 1200+ pages of it; 200 down, 1000 to go.

Zeno's Paradox: the tortoise will always win the race.

THanks, as always

Thanks for the very complete answer to my question; I can't "hear" the pump; I am a war veteran, my hearing is shot for subtle sounds.

Please remember to disconnect the battery before working on the fuel pump.
