Manual Transmission

My car has of late started to shift hard....

i was wondering.. how do we "service" a manual transmission? do we have to change any sorta transmission fluid for an MT? what makes the shift hard.. i have had some problems with the reverse too... where it does not engage at first....

can adjusting the clutch make a difference?

can some one post a DIY to solve this problem please?

Thanks,

Shashank

as for the fluid it is just 10w30 motor oil changing it will make it a little smoother (if it is dirty). My car also has problem going into reverse it is not to big of a deal.( it helps to give it a LITTLE gas the try to put it into gear. I do not think anything is wrong with the trany. As for ajusting the clutch i would not have any idea about that subject.

Ohh....when my car has not warmed up or when it is cold outside the first 3-4 shifts are alway really jerky but it goes away quickly.

good luck, Kyle

When out trannys get old you need to put the car in 1st then put it in reverse. It should just drop right in!

if it is just a fluid problem what I am about to tell you will fix it.

1) Get RedLine 10w-40 Oil (Advance Auto usually has it)
2) Change fluid with redline
3) 1,000 miles later change it again with redline
* At this point examin what you are taking our. If it is any darker than what you put in continue, you probably will.
4) Another 500 miles Change the fluid again. Again examin the fluid you remove. If any darker than what you put in repeat step 4 until what you take out looks like what you put in.

After this you should find many improvements in your transmission. That is if this is a fluid only deal. After racing on the track a few times in a car with no service history my clutch is chattering into 2nd. Time to upgrade the trans for me!
Later!

Change the oil like sleeprlegendcp says. Then, when you start off everyday, run it through the gears like !_Hot_Legend_L says. I used to have problems shifting into reverse. My Brother suggested shifting through all the gears first. I haven't had the problem since.
