Marvel Mystery Oil

Well guys I've had it in for a week in both my oil and tank of gas and I must say something about the car has changed so much for the better.. The car seems to have tons more power to dispense for my driving pleasure and I am very very pleased with Marvel Mystery Oil's performance so far. I had one bottle of the stuff and it was the stuff for Gas and Crankcase oil so I put 4 oz in my gas tank then poured the rest in my oil and its been cleaning for a week now as I said. The oil in right now is 10w-30 Valvoline (prob maxlife, I didn't ask if he used that or regular but seein as I have 180k miles I'm pretty sure its maxlife) and I'm going to change the oil tomorrow probably. Castrol is on sale right now at Auto Zone so I'm getting some of that. My question is how much does our crankcase hold? (I'm too lazy to look it up and I knew I wanted to tell you guys how good the additive is working so far anyways so I just ask it here as its an easy question)

There are always several different opinions about additives and I'm just hoping that my results will be able to verify whether or not MMO works good in our Legends for future situations that others may face when trying to find a product that works with our engines.

Anyway back to the oil change. I just got done getting my oil changed after having another additive in there so technically this is my second oil treatment on the engine but first with MMO. I don't know what oil I have to put in... Winter is rapidly approaching and temps are already down to 40F degrees in the mornin so I want the right weight.. 5w-30 Castrol is what I'm looking at and I've been reading old oil threads and grey recommended that someone try synthetic oil in their engines if they want the best for them and I was wonderin which one of Castrol's oils is synthetic? the high mileage or GTX? I haven't gone to check the oils yet and I don't feel like researching.. I'd rather hear what you guys have to say about what I do next. The oil per quart is cheap though until november so I'm ready to buy mine and change it.

Another thing: before I jump and change my oil should I wait longer for the MMO to continue working? I haven't driven many miles on it yet, a weeks worth of miles isn't many at all for me and on bobistheoilman.com I saw someone say ride 100-200 miles before changin it... what do I do?

I've heard stories about that Mystery Oil and they have all been bad.

Problem is, that additive is just a detergent that cleans, and when your engine has allot of miles there is sludge buildup, MMO brakes up the sludge buildup but the problem is, the next place this goes is into Oil Runners, Oil Pump Pickup Screen, Lifters and so on.

This eventually cloggs the oil system and leads to engine damage/failure.

This stuff really only works on well maintained engines that have had very frequent oil changes (every 3000miles or sooner)

If the Oil Changes have been negleted, dont use MMO.

As for synthedic oils, with your milage I would not reccomend switching from Regular Oil thats its had all its life to synthedic.

For Winter Time just stick with Castrol GTX 5w30.

Summertime stick with Castrol GTX 10w30

that reminds me, I was also meaning to mention and ask how good it would be (i'm not expecting it'd be good at all to do this) to switch from the valvoline maxlife 10w-30 its been running since 1997 to a different oil :-/ I got the valvoline people to print out the records of the car and the 3rd owner who lives about a house down the road from me (by the way I live in the "country" and i have a giant yard and 1 neighbor directly across from me and then that neighbor has a neighbor on each side of him but they are spread out fairly good considered to developements others are used to) and in 1997 it had 122000 miles and i'm sure they put high mileage in there so u think a switch to 5w-30 castrol gtx would be safe still? that's what I was planning on getting all along so i'm glad to hear that. and by the way the first owner of my car worked at an acura dealership and i would be amazed to hear he didn't do his oil changes because he fixed almost anything that needed fixing when he had the car, the second owner was like his cousin or something.. he probably did it right as well, then the third owner got it and she's related to that cousin I believe or something.. it really doesn't matter that much, just that i'm pretty sure the majority of the car's life its had a regular maintanence schedule and the marvel seems to be doing wonders right now so i'm willing to bet it was a great decision to do so but thanks for clarifying that for others who may be wondering if they should hop on the bandwagon and get some MMO for their old mistreated engines..

thanks guys

Just out of curiosity how did you determine that. Better pick up, (etc...)?

well i don't know if i can tell you exactly.. everything just seems to be right.. smooth acceleration, somehow (maybe marvel didn't effect this cause i don't see how it could) the tranny seems to be working better, smoother shifts and better acceleration at certain rpms in some gears.. i haven't really hit the gas hard enough lately to feel it shift down and really fly but i will do that tomorrow after school cause i turn up a road that has a big hill u go up right after u make the turn and its easy to really see how much power ur ride has on that hill. it may not really be clear how i describe the car's new life but it just seems.. different and i like it :-)

Your motor oil can do many strange things to an engine.

You would be supprised how clean oil can improve performance.

A well oiled machine is a happy machine.

Just be carefull with the MMO.

Your car may be running good now since it cleaned the smaller deposits up but if it gets to a big hunk of sludge and free's that, its all downhill from there.

I put MMO in a '79 280ZX I used to have. I put it in the gas. It worked so good, it cleaned the rust off the inside of my tank, causing my screen in the fuel pump to clog up. It also clogged my fuel filter. After changing the fuel filter three times, I finally had to drop the tank and clean out all the loosened rust.

I hope you have better luck with it, but I will never use it again.

I have an old lawnmower (13 yrs old) that I've never changed the oil on. I check the oil level once in a while and when it needs more oil I put fresh sears oil in it. This thing doesn't even burn oil as in smoking and it runs fine to this day. So your theory about changing the oil every 3000 miles could be more myth than truth.

I use 5w30 synthetic blend oil. I used get a valve tap when starting the in engine in the morning and when I used that oil no more tap and the engine has been running smoother.

I hear what your saying but a lawn mower engine is alot smaller and i assume less complicated then a car engine.
You also don't run the lawn mower for as long or as hard as you run your cars engine.
I only run my mower for an hour every week or so., and i can't drive my mower hard, or force it to redline ( i'm sure there are ways to do it on the mower engine, but normal people don't).

I understand your point, but i don't think you can compare the two.

I had a lawnmower that lasted 15 years. I didn't change the oil and put in some once in a while. Finally died. Why? Low compression. Why? I found out when I got a new one and started changing the oil every 20 hours. You should see the amount of metal in each change even after 3 or so after break in. It's settled a bit now. But good clean oil is absolutely essential to the Honda V6. It is a pretty high precision engine with features that have only appeared in the NSX and Type R Integras. It needs a good lube guys.

. You shouldn't be comparing a lawn mower to a legend, maybe a civic, but not a legend

well i have one final decision to make that I wanted to ask opinions on.. its come down to the synthetic vs regular non-high mileage oil. I know i'm getting castrol but I don't know what kinda exactly.. I read greylegend's old oil replies in the past to learn that synthetics are better for ur engine and they protect it more and I think if i get that i'll go with castrol syntec 0w-30 (i don't have any made in germany castrol tho so i gotta get usa made oil) but if i don't get the synthetic i'm going with the gtx 5w-30. heres a few things to consider when answering my question of synthetic or not synthetic:

-car has had regular oil changes its whole..umm life
-last 5 years of oil changes were all valvoline maxlife 10w-30
-car is running really great right now at this moment
-winter is approaching and in north carolina i can see temps gettin into the 30's (as the low) within the next month
-i only use the car for driving to and from school as well as other little things but not much highway driving yet

well i guess that's about all u need to know.. so which is it.. syntec or gtx? btw thx for all ur help guys, i really appreciate it, as will others researching this topic in the future

I would go synethic blend oil can castrol or pennzoil. I used to just use 5w30 regular oil but the it used to tap now with the synethic blend it does not tap and ride smooth. I would go synethic blend my opinion.
