My altenator failed under a year!

It does not suprise you guys I bet, but I had a 2nd G1 so I had a backup.
What place does the rebuilding of altenators and can up tha Amps on it.
A place that can have my altenator last longer!.

What steps should we all take to keep our altenators on low load?

Why not either buy a new or remanufactured one from Auto Zone or a local auto chain. Or even going a step further and getting one from Acura ?? I have 272K miles on a '90 Coupe and have only replaced mine with an OEM one once. Sometimes the money you save on getting a non-Acura one isn't worth the aggravation and money that's caused by getting a " cheap " one...it failing in a short period of time. It costs you more in the long run !

A battery with an undetected internal short will cause an alternator to quickly fail.

The alternator should not be too hot to palm the side of the casing. If so, the battery is creating a situation where it's having to draw too many amps too often.

It has been shown to me that the battery can have a defect of this type and still test 'good'.

He didn't even get a cheap one. He took a used one from another Legend he had sitting around and used that. You have no way of knowing what life to expect of a used alternator. Really the decent priced ones at advance auto are good enough. They have a good warranty as well. A rebuild is an option but you will have much more down time. Just go into an autparts store and look at prices. While there ask them about locations that rebuild alternators, and then head there. Do your research on both if you are really set on this. Personally I would call Acura of Augusta and get a new one. Then you know it is done forever.

I hear you guys

The alternator went 10/2004
I got a shop to replace it. I know it is not Stock replacement. (Here is a good test for that "Lifetime warrantee")
The 2nd G1 had a working alternator so I just swapped it.
I feel the 2nd G1's alternator is OEM.
The facts are
The OEM Last longer just like you guys said.
The AutoZone alternators may put me back to square 1.

Trust me it took me 2 hours ish to replace the alternator and I do not want to do that once a year.

I want to know if there is some company out there that can rebuild a Legend alternator with quality parts that Acura use and make it a bit stronger.
I do not feel our cars perform very well in 2005 with all the gadgets we love.

CARPUTERS
AMPS/SYSTEMS ETC
FOG LIGHTS
HIDS

I want the car to be satisfied at all RPMs
I do not want the headlight to go dim for any reasons.

I have the same problem with overworking my alternator. But since I disconnected the cruise, A/C and a few other things the car has been sitting at 14.31V at idle.

What is the full specs of the Altenator.

On Idle should be at 14 DC volts?

How much Amps

How much is too much.

How much can the ECU handle and if It got more Juice, Whould it process faster? or it is just a Dump A__ ECU?

What wire is the ground wire on the altenator? I want to upgrave all ground wires.

The ECU is setup to shut the car down at 15v. As long as you are under 15v the ECU will operate. I believe our alt. is only rated at 70A. I use 60 just for my two Kenwood amps. Well prolly not 60 but one has two 20A fuses and the other has one 20A fuse. But you can have as much of a current output as you want. The voltage regulator will only allow the alt to produce as much power as is required at that moment. If you have a massive system in your car I would suggest getting at least a 1 farad Capacitor and installing it in your trunk. I'm running a 1.5 farad Stinger cap and it is doing just fine on my 1300w system.

Later!

Got it.
Thanks for your input.

A Cap is good for the car as well right? (Without a sound system)
Should'nt the cap help at hi loads removing small loads off of the Altenator/battery?

A cap helps out more with intermittant loads or voltage spikes. It basically levels out the voltage scale. I don't see why it wouldn't help out just the car alone. I'll have to check it out with mine. Turn my system off and have my brother randomly turn things on while I look at a voltmeter. I'll let you know.

I've got to agree with ND1980LS. If you can live with the output of the stock alternator, it's hard to beat HONDA/ACURA remanufactured. I imagine different rebuilders supply in different areas of the country(unless they're importing remfg?), but I have about 170k on my HONDA/ACURA remanufactured alternator.
