My car doesn't know its in Park

When I park my car I have to push forward on the shifter so the red park light on the dash lights. If I don't do that my key doesn't come out of the ignition. How do I fix this problem?

If you don't push the shifter forward, is your car actually in park or does it stay in neutral?
If it stays in neutral, your shift cable needs to be adjusted or replaced.

I had a similiar problem where all the positions on my shifter were off by one slot. Found out the shift cable was toast--had it replaced and it was amazing.
