need to replace cat / resonator pipe

okay well it seems that my catalytic converter or whatever has a huge hole in it. When i got my car back from the mechanic this summer he thought there was just a hole in the muffler, but the noise became worse and worse, and i decided to look under my car and right in the middle of the car, a thick pipe had a huge hole in it, and i think its the cat but im not sure. the reason i think it is the cat is because when i accelerate i feel jerking and there is deff a loss of power from when i first got it back from the shop. and im thinking thats becuase the hole in the CAT got bigger and its ****ing up the exaust. also, i get like 150 miles to the tank now, and i use to get 200 + , and doesn't the cat have to do with how the fuel is burned. sorry i don't know much about the subject, but i wanted ur guys imput. lastly, i need a high flow cat as soon as possible, would anyone happen to know of any websites or stores which would have a cat for my 90 legend, and how much would it cost for a shop to take my old one out and replace it? thanks in advance

The jerking during acceleration is probably not from your exhaust at all (but I have no idea what it is from). The hole in your cat shouldn't cause any performance problems. All it does it clean the exhaust as it is leaving the engine.

As for your MPG, that is pretty horrible. Again, the cat isn't at fault there. However, when you are getting around 10 mpg (I'm assuming you fill the tank about when the light comes on), something is wrong. How many miles does your car have? My old beat up 87 got around 18mpg (with both highway and city in there), but my Coupe 5spd gets 23 city and 28+ highway when I drive it correctly.

My car has 140k miles on it, and it has a new transmission and breaks, thats why im convinced its the CAT. Before i noticed the hole, when it was really small im guessing, there was never jerking when accelerating, now as the hole is huge, it feels like the air which is suppose to go through the excaust system and out the muffler isnt getting there, and going out the cat. and when i say huge hole, i mean huge, its prob like 7 inches in diameter, and it is burned all around it . Even if its not the CAT which is causing these problems, i still need to get it replaced, so any suggestions or links would help , thanks guys

A seven inch hole???? Wow.

Just take off your entire exhaust system from the cat onwards and test it out. I still don't think that a hole in the cat could screw up the car that much. And how was the hole formed? Rust? Or some other weird phenomenon?

A restricted cat will cause those problems-poor performance, bad gas milage. If it looks that bad on the outside the inside could be deformed and restricting airflow.
