Could be heat. Maybe the Tranny fluid cooling isn't working. When I had my rad replaced they put a pair of vice grips on the cooling line and forgot about it. Unfortunately the vice grips couldn't be seen until the battery was out. Drove like a drunk when it heated up.

Its not the easiest thing to do with these models, ive had my tranny rebuilt already so ive been down this road before... that shudder is your clutches slipping theyre on their way out save some money and park it until you can fix the problem, no you dont have to lift the engine much , but you should have a rack to hold it up since you'll be removing some mounts

ps: anyone find any high performance tranny parts for the G1 models ???? i would really like to find some

I'd verify your TCU is working properly.

Does your S3 light flash on the instrument cluster? Any codes on the TCU?

Before anything else, I'd reset the ECU. It does have a memory of your driving habits. Reset will put it back into 'learning mode' for about 500mi.

Watch for codes.

I'm of the opinion, from your description, that the tranny may be fine due to your restart clearup conditions. I think it something else.

tcu was bad ..just replaced it ...the old one would show a constant s3 light ..now with new one its gone...i reset everything by pulling alt. sens. fuse for 15 minutes ,,then drove ..been doing 3 x's flush with honda atf and it goes in reddish and comes out darkish....also did the auto-rx tranny cleaning ..might be all tied in ??

Yeah, I'd suppose so. Appears there's an issue there with the dark ATF. If that much stuff is moving around, there's likely some solenoid screen sludge. BUT, the solenoids tend to throw codes when they don't act right.

I'm still suspiscious of your TCU. Are you certain the one you installed is good? Any chance it from a 1990 car? I'm not even certain the TCU's from other years are identical.

Come to think of it, is your '88 a sedan? IOW, a 2.5L vs 2.7L?
I wouldn't bet on a TCU from a 2.7L in that case. At least verify somehow.

BTW, 15 SECS will do on the Alt Sense fuse.

Maybe Grey's around, he's the AutoRx guy. But, I seem to recall certain kinds of seals being negatively affected with that stuff.

NEVER HAD A code thrown from the tranny..all i know now is s3 light used to be solid lit all the time..put this new one in and its not lit anymore.today it dropped gear twice...like be driving and all sudden nothing...so pulled over and turned it off and then back on and fine.if my clutches were bad does this make sense?...i have a drive way that is about a 60 degree angle ...Start outy in 2nd and not a problem....that how i drive ..drop it down to 2nd then when 30mph comes pop it in s3...maybe i was going to slow for the gear i was in ???cause it only pops out at slow or start up speeed...like ill try to start in d to see if it magically starts itself in first and pop......but if i put it in 2nd i get fine accel.

It's only supposed to blink.

Unscrew the midpoint connection to the speedometer cable. It should throw a Code 4 or 9 on the TCU (after a drive). I think you'll also get a Code 17 on the ECU.

That will tell if they're working properly.

heh.. wish I had your luck. My tranny jolted me when it started giving me similar problems. Never been the same since. I'm about to clean my solenoids and see if I've got metal shavings.

G1: Speedometer Cable Lubrication

...about half way down.
Thanks to cctyler.

Remember also that the tranny will be very funny acting without speed input.
(maybe not so funny.)

Just drive it long enough to get the codes.
Check Engine light should come on and S3 should blink.
