Post No reverse ?

ok i just got a used tranny from a junkyard ...and its been werking fine for a while now ... but i woke up the other day and had no reverse and when i drive it it will hang in neutral in between 1st and 2nd gear and will not switch into 2nd or any other gear ... when i called the junkyard they said it could either be my tcu ... or my neutral safety switch .... my tranny is still under warrenty ... should i waste my time trying to change out the tcu or the safety switch or should i just have them honor my warrenty ..... thnx everyone for your input

i'd say your solenoids need to be cleaned. If you do a search you can find out how. take advantage of your warranty

Post hmmm ....

well honestly ... that was the first thing i did ... they all have really strong loud clicks ... the screens and fluid Are nice i do have really fine almost glitter like flakes in the tran/fluid ....i also went and purchased a TCU unit today and installed it ... it took care of my s3 blinking problem but didnt give me reverse or second or third ... it went from 1st to neutral nothing else . but im thinking along the lines of neutral safety switch possibly ... if it isnr that then it has to be my tranny or tranny pump .. cause i used that tranny pump off of my old transmission and my new transmission is doing the same thang as my old transmission ... only first gear nothing else ... my tranny is under warranty so im trying all my other less labor envoled ways first b4 spending atleast 2 days on the tranny extraction / installation ....... i really appreciate the people who actually take time to reply to question asked in this forum ... thanks .... and if anyone could share some input /opinions that might be helpful to my situation would be greatly appreciated and returnd thnx in advance

too bad about the trans.

If it worked fine for a while do you think it may be heating up too much?
I had all kinds of trouble when I had the rad replaced and some bonehead left a pair of vicegrips on the cooler line right under the battery. Otherwise your playing with an expensive rebuild.

hmm ..

well thats a good point i did just have to change the thermostat ... and they only had a higher temp than the original i think its 160* F but i dont think it could be the actual engine heat cause it wont do anything but first and neutral from a cold start ....

It isn't engine heat

The transmission fluid passes through the (i think) the transmission cooler. At the bottom of the rad. There is a hose from the trans to it. If it is blocked your trans will overheat. Someone with tech skills could explain it better. It's worth checking and cheaper than all the other stuff.

I lost the reverse gear last night for a little while, so I checked the fluid and it was dangerously low and burnt smelling...
I topped it off and *bang* the reverse worked again...but now it delays about 3 seconds before shifting over..

strange huh

Im going to invest in in line tranny filter and flush the system, hopefully that will smothen things out again

Angry ok ...

i noticed after i changed my tcu unit ... that im able to drive in S3 and have all the gears auto shift and also in drive just no overdrive and also no reverse ... . and if i punch the gas insted of staying in first while its in drive itll go into Overdrive ... .. now i noticed that on the tranny there are two lil plugs with wires that go into the tranny ,,, on the driverside beside the front wheel .....i have no idea what they are and if anyone could explain what they might be ... would be great .... i disconected them and drove it and it made my s3 light blink but drove excatlly the same as it did with them on ... could this be my problem ... i wished i knew what they were seeing how the selenoids dont control OD or reverse .... some with knowledge please answer THNX
