I have had an ongoing ever slighty increasing noise from the rear of my 87 Coupe L Auto over the last ~5,000 miles.
-the noise is a dull, medium-low pitch noise that increases in volume with increased speed... I can't hear it at speeds less than 40mph. -if cruising at 60mph, the noise is fairly steady but does change sometimes with bumps in the road... what I just figured out this last week is that if I make even a slight turn to the RIGHT at 60mph the noise suddenly gets louder, and straightening the wheel again resumes the noise to it's normal hum. Conversely, turning the wheel to the left abrubtly causes the noise to mostly disappear for a second, but the noise quickly resumes. -the noise doesn't happen while braking, and in fact I think braking makes the noise go away. -the suspension acts completely normal - nothing strange at all. I think it is a wheel bearing - is there anything else it could be? If the noise is worse while turning RIGHT, which wheel bearing does that implicate?? (I cannot discern which side of the car the noise is coming from). Thanks a LOT. This is my first post here... was a member on the other legend forums for 5 years but the site is down(??). -mcjeez 87 Legend L Coupe Auto 262K Original Drivetrain |

That's my thought too - a wheel bearing. I shoulda mentioned that I suspected it might have been a tire, but when I rotated my tires recently it made no difference in the noise.
Anybody have a strong hunch as to whether it is the left or the right? The noise gets much louder when I turn right.. and a little softer when I turn left. I still can't figure out which side it is coming from... maybe I will have someone else drive and I will sit in the back seat. -mcjeez 87 Legend L Coupe 262K miles original drivetrain |

Pull both rear wheels and get the calipers out of the way. Turn the hubs by hand to see if you can feel any difference.
If I were to guess, I'd say the left side is the offending bearing. Turning right loads the left rear of the car; turning left unloads the left rear.
