Oil Lamp?!?!? Why Does It Turn On!

What in the world is wrong with my 1988 Acura Legend V6L??

The OIL light started to blink at 83,012 miles and since then has blinked after 30 mins @ 75 MPH, or having the engine at a constant 3500 RPM, after a full stop accelerating normally to 15 MPH or just going over bumps / uneven road...hell putting it in gear froma start-up causes the light.

We've tried 20w-50 (since gone back to 10w-40)
We've tired replacing the Oil Pressure Unit.
We’ve had all the TSB’s related to the Oil Lamp faxed to us from our local Acura Dealer (It is not a lose connection)
We've dropped the Oil Pan and replaced the O-Ring and Oil Pan gasket (after cleaning everything within the pan like the oil pickup).
We've even wrapped the Exhaust pipe going past the Oil Pan with heat wrap (the oil pan's heat is mostly caused by the exhaust pipe).

I even over filled the car with 6 qts of oil!!! The light didn't come on then! well, until after 2300 miles I was rewarded with a nice blinking RED light for all the cars that pass me see how greatly tuned my Acrua really is.....

We're now going to put an Oil Pressure Gauge and disable the stupid light.

Other than this stupid oil light, the car is so versatile and nimble; overall a great car. Anyone have any tips on this damn oil light?

on my friend's legend, it was blinking so he asked me to try and fix it, so I just reseted the ecu by pulling out the fuse for like a minute that blew on it then put it back in it worked and he keeps telling people how smart i am because i'm just 12 yr old .
so tell me if it works after you try it.

Parting out a 91 L 5-speed, let me know if you need any parts besides engine and 5-speed parts. The car is Rosewood brown with type E cloth interior.

This has been a perpetual problem with the '88. I have had the problem and 'temporarily' solved it by removing the darned bulb. Dangerous tho'.It was suggested in the other forum and this that the console solder points come loose and cause intermittant contacts hence the flashing. Verify that you do not have an oil pressure problem by connecting a guage directly to the sender unit (assuming that this is ok).

BINGO, he got it.

but when the circuit is f*cked, you get a solid red oil light.

when it blinks you have low oil pressure. bad bad thing

pyros, I think it is the opposite. The ECU sees a temporary loss and then flashes even if it is restored. A solid light is when the pressure is too low for a continuous period.

I resoldered the top circuit board on my gauge cluster. Light doesn't ever blink again. While you're in there, interchange the D light with the S4 light bulb as the D eventually burns out since the car spends the most time in D.

I assume the oil filter is good.

sorry your right, i havent been in my legend for a while so stupid me.

mine has the same problem, I'ts funny because i remember not really careing that much about it, so i figured it was solid because a blinking light would drive me insane.

Thumbs up

The first thing we tired was pulling the fuse to reset the system. Needless to say it didn't work; hence my reason for posting on this forum.. (Don't state the obvious buddy)

We just installed an Oil Pressure Gauge last weekend. The Gauge mounts under the Dash, we routed the oil line though the Firewall down to the Oil Pressure sending unit where we have a T-Fitting installed. The Oil Light still comes on, but it doesn't matter b/c I can see the Oil Pressure is where it needs to be.

Thanks for all the advice board. This forum is a great way to share knowledge.

Glad you have peace of mind. One of these days when you have some time remove your instrument cluster and retouch the points with solder or if you could put your hands on an intrument cluster resolder the points and install. Removing the cluster is easy.
Hey the forum is here to help and share knowledge.

...and for you guys who don't know which end of a soldering iron to hold on to: a new circuit board is only about fifty bucks (CDN) at your local Acura dealer.
