QUESTION: Power Steering Fluid leak
Vehicle: 1987 Legend L
I check my fluid levels almost every day before starting the car in the morning; I also park the car over a piece of cardboard so I can monitor changes in oil leaks, etc. Recently, I have begun to notice that after using the car most of the day in running errands (about 25-30 miles), the following morning my PSF reservoir is down about 1/4"; also there is at least one dime-sized spot of PSF on the cardboard located on the left side (driver) of the vehicle, about mid-engine. With all the plumbing in the engine bay and the undercarriage plastic below, I can't see from where the leak is occurring. Question: From where do these leaks generally occur? Has anyone recently diagnosed the same problem? What was your repair? Is this just normal old age or a more serious problem? Thanks as always.

My 88 sedan started the same way. Could be 2 possible items. Either high pressure lines between pump and rack & pinion, or the rack & pinion itself. Mine ended up being, lucky me, the rack & pinion. Rebuilt rack was about $225 and labor was about $325...however, I had them replace upper arms, lower ball joints, outer tie rod ends (inner tie rod ends were included with rack) just a rack might be cheaper. Make sure whoever looks at it looks real close as to not overlook a line in addition to the rack. Hope this helps, although bad news it might be.
By the way, I've heard mixed feelings about it so you might want to ask around...Lewis Power Steering Sealer. Heard from some it's the best thing since sliced bread, but due to Honda specific fluids, I've heard other say no way. Haven't tried it myself, so I can't vouch for it either way. I just blew out the HP hose on mine. It started as a drip, then dribble and expanded over a week or so to uncontrollable.
I'm waiting on a part now, but it's supposed to be here tomorrow. Thought I'd successfully patch the original leak at the seam of the 2nd steel fitting from the pump. But, that seemed to create new problems. It's like the hose material is disintigrating. Patch one place, pops another leak elsewhere. Doesn't seem quite normal. BUT, about February, I put some AutoRX in the power steering reservoir to run awhile. Don't drive much so it's been in there about 4 months now, at least before the leaks caused refills every day. Wondered if it rotted my hose somehow. Probably shouldn't have left it in so long, but was working along the 1500 miles spec. Like I said, I don't drive much, 100 miles a week or so. It's just now at the mileage for changing. Anyway, I'd bet on the hose rather than the steering box. But, it could be either. If it's the hose, it's going to get worse in a hurry.
