Trouble starting car
lately, any time that I try to start my car after a good while of it being idle (usually several hours), it has trouble starting. When I turn the key I usually just hear a click, kind of like the sound of a relay being activated, but no engine turn. I check the CPU and it gives me no code. The battery seems fine because all the electronic components work properly.
For a while I thought that it might be the ignition coil, be cause once I looked at it and it seemed to be coated with build up and corrotion. I cleaned it up with my key and it started right away. However, the next time this happened, I tried the same procedure and nothing happened. Lately, if Istep on the gas a few times and then leave my foot on the gas as I turn the key, it usually starts, but once in a while it still gives me trouble. Does this sound familiar to anybody? Any advice? Thanks in advance ![]()

The problem is most likely in the starting system, not the ignition system.
First thig to do is to make sure your battery connections are clean and tight. Cleaning the connections will requre removing the cables from the battery.

I have the same problem. It's probably gonna be a dirty starter switch (in ur key cylender when you start the car). I have yet to get off my lazy butt and clean it.

I kept letting this slide 'cause I could ussually start the car after about two to five tries. Finally, the other day when I got out of work, I got into the car, turned the key about a million times and no luck. After a while of twiddling with it I found that the wire going from the ignition coil to the distributor was bad. Replaced it and evrything Seemed fine. Drove home, drove to work the next morning, and drove back home and the car seemed fine. Then I went t othe gym and when I was going home, the car would not start anymore. I tired everything that the manual could tell me, but I could not get it to start. After leaving the car in the parking lot over night and having no luck on the next day, I finally gave in and called a tow truck and took it to a mechanic. The mechaninc found that the starter was bad, replaced it and all seems fine now.
The one thing that the repair manual did not tell me about. When it came to the section of the starter, all it said was "The stater is beyond the comprehension of the home mechanic, we recomend that you take your car to a mechanic or autorized dealer if you suspect the starter to be defective". Oh well. Thanks for the help buds. Hope this helps some one else.

I know you resolved your problem allready but for future references anyone who has a problem with the car not starting you should always give your starter a tap with a metal rod. its accessible just open your hood and next to the transmission dip stick is the starter hit it and your car should start. you can do away with this until you replace your starter.

Engine won't crank = battery, batt. connections, starter solenoid internal contacts, starter motor, wiring & relay between ignition switch, including ign. switch.
