Weird tapping clicking noise

when i am driving along i get a loud tapping noise, or clicking noise coming from what seems to be the left side of the engine bay.

this is not CV joints or anything.
it happens when i take off, and generally when i am driving at a slow pace (under 60 kmph)
it does not always happen, but when it does it is loud and almost embarrasing (driving past ur friends and ur car sounds like a time bomb)

the thing is i have no idea what it is because soon as you come to a complete standstill the noise stops.

any help?

thankx, mike.

I'd bet it's your ABS pump. It's down low in front of the battery. It can make quite a racket which varies a little depending on the car and circumstance. It attempts to pressurize your ABS system. If it's leaking or low on fluid, it'll attempt for 2 minutes, then shut itself off. If there's a slow leak in the system, it'll come on from time to time to restore pressure. This could be anytime and any interval. The fact that you can hear it usually means there's another problem, like low fluid. The ABS system is totally independent of the regular braking system and so has its' own fluid reservoir/master cylinder.

Anyway, the first thing to check is the fluid and you also likely have an ABS Light on your dash. If so, you need to check the ABS computer LED in the trunk for a code. Then, fix it if it isn't too expensive. The other option, and the most often selected by our group, is to pull the three ABS fuses in the under hood fuse box. But, to get rid of the ABS light on the dash, you have to remove the bulb.

WhenHeartsRunDry: They probably did that so you wouldn't think when you got in the car the first time... Have you ever tried to use your ABS system?

could be the master cylinder.......it keeps trying to pressurize the bracking system.....it started out intermittently at first... then the sound happens more frequently....and braking got softer......had mine replaced.....voila.....no more sound and hard brakes again.........

*Buzzer* Negative! Cause when I busted my Left front brake line I lost all the fluid in both reseviors!! Plus, in order for the ABS system to function and pump the brakes it has to be tied in somewhere! Also if that nice lil rubber pressure line coming off your ABS accumulator going to the modulator breaks say hello to no brakes!

My ABS light on the dash board keeps lighting up when I turn on the engine. Does anyone know what is wrong.

Thanks.

Guys I may be wrong I think but Remickz car is Right hand drive meaning that his MC, Brake booster, fluid, and related lines would be on the right side of the car...although I cant say for sure that the ABS stuff is as well but I would imagine so...

I had a wheel bearing on its way out on my rear passenger wheel and it also sounded like a clicking...at slow speeds I could hear it reflect off of houses or walls and it would be a ticking that would get faster and a little bit louder with speed...just an idea?

ABS pump more than likely. No light will come on but you will hear a noise. Trying to pressurise the system and the filter may be clogged.

Does the ABS light stay on? You probably could find info using the search function. I also notice you have a '95 Legend. The 2nd generation forum might serve your needs better as your car will have problems more commonly seen by posters on that board. I hope you don't take this as my being unfriendly. I'm trying to help.

Thanks for signing up and replying to my thread 8 years later.
I have gone through many cars since then, and unfortunately no longer have my Legends.

Unfortunately i don't think it was my flywheel bolts, it would have been noisy lifters.
