Or the TURBO for that matter! Had to say it, lol. Anyway, been tuning for an hour now and needed a break. The fuel is building up 'cus it's running VERY rich until the timing curve is worked out, then I'll do fuel, but at this rate that'll be tomorrow. The timing just up to 6000 rpm will take all night, but man I wan't to drive this thing around and raise some hell with basically open-headers right now!

And as for the videos, I had the camera rolling for the start attempts. I didn't think they were worth seeing - a no-crank and a no-start - nothing fun. I'll post the first startup and idle, but I can't rev it til I do the timing calibration, just to be safe. The idle should be quite nice, tho, with the big injectors, and only the headers hooked up. And a roll-out video will be made, of course, as well as a first drive video. Next couple days hopefully.
OH YOU GUYS! haha I got my timing belt and stuff done there a few years ago. the convertible used to be a different color I believe. I remember it had a tan tarp at one point, correct me if this is a different car I'm talking about...

Same car. Got rid of the canvas top, it was falling apart. It's come a long way since then.

Never even got to the timing curve last night, but I will tonight. I'm starting from scratch. I'm basically gonna hold it at each RPM range, advance the timing until it begins to knock, then back off a couple of degrees. It's the best I can do until I get to a dyno. I got pretty tied up last night setting the cooling fan control range, and hooking up the fans, new battery terminals (had a lot of resistance in the ground terminal, and it was affecting my data logging), wired up the factory tach (which was useless because it's now seeing the MSD signal, so the tach reads about 2 or 3 times what it should, funny I didn't think about that). I should be ready to start tuning tonight.

well done, i've left the orignal wiring in on mine, is the tach not ment to go before the msd unit. i'e on the signal input to it. or does your msd have a tach out?

i best get moving on mine, still 1/2 way through putting the pcb in the orignal ecu case.

The MSD does not have a tach lead for the gauge, and the original one from the coil is seeing 2 or 3 signals instead of one. MSD makes an adapter that will 'filter out' the extra signals to correct this problem, but my SDS computer has a tach output, so I'm just using it.

If you look at the wiring diagram for the ignition circuit, you'll see the tach lead from the factory coil is just connected to the igniter input to the coil, with a resistor in between.(This connection is actually inside the coil, not spliced outside) So the tach signal wire sees the same signal the igniter puts out(1 signal per cylinder fire), or that the MSD box is putting out(2 or 3 signals per cylinder fire). I think the adapter wires in between the coil and the tach wire, but I really don't know for sure 'cus I haven't bought one.

OOPS! I was wrong! The MSD box DOES have a tach output, but I didn't see it before, because the hole for that wire was blocked off. I also did some further reading and found out that you should NOT connect anything extra to a coil that is powered by MSD, such as a tach. I'm only allowed one stupid thing a day, so I can't mess up again tonight when I try this new-found tach lead. Also, the MSD tach adapter I spoke of before should not be used with this SDS system. The manual says it causes interference, so I'm not even gonna try that.

Progress was made tonight. The tach lead from the MSD box works fine with the factory tach. I did the timing calibration with the crank sensor, set idle timing, and it runs much more smoothly, but another couple of problems have emerged. I have a coolant leak from the water pipe under the intake manifold. I cursed before when I saw that the head gasket set I bought didn't come with the large o-rings which seal this area, and I just matched them up with some a/c o-rings. Apparently this was a bad idea. Oh well, gives me something to do tomorrow night, I guess.

Good news! The leaks are fixed, SDS is completely installed (except for looming the wires and putting in more gauges), and it runs decently (driveable anyway).

Check out my CF gauge pod, Cardboard Fibre that is.
Dont make fun, had to put it in something.

The turbo housing isn't here yet, but I'm ready to tune. Best to tune it without boost first anyway, 'cus all I have to do is change the MAP values after the turbo install, and I can leave the timing values the same, because there's a separate timing-retard graph for boost, too! It just gets better and better the more I learn about this system. Haven't completely worked out the timing yet, but it already revs much quicker than stock.
