94 legend did the weirdest thing today
OK. So, as you may or may not know, my 94 legend has been experiencing the typical cooling system/over heating problems, blah blah blah. Well, this is completely different....
My temp gauge was normal. I was driving in D3 (automatic, obviously), at about 40 mph, going steady and all that. Suddenly, my spedometer dropped down to zero, like the line had been cut or something, and the light in the dash that tells you what gear you're in started flashing at D4, but stayed lit at D3 all at the same time. I shifted up to D4, not having any idea what to do, but the light kept flashing. The spedometer kicked back in within maybe 15 seconds and stayed working. I didn't know what was going on, so while stopped at a light, I shifted between all gears, but the D4 light kept flashing. I just drove home, since I was only about a block away. I had to turn the car off to get out and check the mail, and when I got back in and turned it back on, the light had stopped flashing. WHAT THE HELL is that about?????????????????? |

Your VSS is going out. It did what it's supposed to do. When the ECU lost the signal from the VSS it caused the D4 to flash. The check engine light may also come on because the computer can no longer "compute" fuel mixture correctly. If the fault is intermittant the lights will go away when you turn it off and back on. It's a common Legend problem

OK. VSS. So, is this a huge problem that will effect the overall function of the car, or is it something I can ignore and not ever know how fast I'm going?? Thing is, I can't afford to fix everything wrong with this car...overheating problems (head gasket or whatever it is that's wrong), it needs a new timing belt, and now the VSS...So, really, I'm just wondering if this is going to cause some safety issue between now and the time I can get a new car.

You can still drive it. If it fails again you might notice worse fuel milage because the ecu will go into a pre set mode when it faults.
I drove my 92 with a bad vss and ended up getting a speeding ticket. I had ordered the part and took the reciept to court to show the judge. He dropped the ticket and made me pay $93 in court costs.

Man i changed my vss myself. It's real easy actually. Cost me 50 bucks at a junkyard for a replacement.

The only warning I would give on the VSS is make sure the car is cold when you go to change it. LMAO.
I burnt myself a few good times as I did on a nice hot summer day, while the car was still nice and warmed up. If I remember correctly I simply had to remove the dust plate, then two bolts for the VSS, disconnect it, install new one, reconnect, replace all the bolts. Very, very simple job. In fact, we have a DIY right here on the forums. How To Replace The VSS
