95 Legend no dashlights when turning key??

ok so my 95 legend does nothing when I turn the key to the II position. I'm supposed to see all lights (check engine, oil, abs, srs, battery)but nothing happens. However, If I slightly turn the key back an inch they will come on. This is weird. Also, the car will start and run fine with the automatic start (but when I put the key in and turn it it will turn off) so its not the engine. Should I replace the ignition switch?

My first guess would be the ignition switch, especially with the dash lights not coming on as you stated. This is a classic symptom of a faulty ignition switch in older Hondas.

Thanks. Is it a pretty straight forward install? I have to figure out how to take off my lower dash panel. I think I stripped out one of the bolts that is down there.

Thanks for the info tho!

The ignition switch is only the wire harness with the electrical switch that attaches to the rear of the key cylinder (so no new key, etc. required).

Yes, my car starts up fine but shuts right off. I know there's nothing wrong with the engine b/c it starts and runs fine with the automatic start. I just pulled the lower dash panel and looked under there. All you have to do is unplug the negative battery terminal, remove the lower dash panel, there are 2 screws to remove your ignition and then follow the wire harness down to the fuse box where the connector is and pull that. I am going to order mine tonight. No new keys needed.

Does anyone know what caused the ignition switch to go bad? Can the one I have be repaired? Do they just randomly stop like that? Luckily it went out while I was at home.

on both of my G2's...the car would start right up (that beautiful Honda startup) and catch right away. but the SECOND you let go of the key, it'll cut right off. Abruptly too...not like you're running out of gas but instantly

yea it's not an awful install but one of those PITA repairs b/c of the routing of the ignition switch and b/c you're upside down looking up at your lower panel. but yea, handful of screws, two plugs and voila!

for anyone else reading who's in the same boat...if you're in dire straights and you gotta drive, I've heard that you can HOLD the key in the START position after it starts up and you can drive. another trick is to move the key from the II position to the ALMOST the start position...then let go of the key so it settles back in the II position. If you're lucky....you'll see dash lights! if you see dash lights, she'll start right up (if the ignition switch is your only problem that is). When I was stuck and had to get going...I just kept doing this till finally I saw dash lights.

I think they just fail over time...when I removed mine, the silver solder that was near the top of the ignition switch FELL RIGHT OFF! I've also heard that you can smack the lower dash and sometimes that will fix the intermittent ignition switch problem - so I think that the solder fails and you get wires touching or shorting = no start

good luck guys!

You guys are lucky to have found ways around this. My car will not start at all. Yes I can get dashlights between I & II position but as soon as it settles in the locking position at II they go out. I used to be able to play with it until they stay on but I guess not mine is completely shot. I just ordered a new ignition switch so hopefully that helps I'll drive my accord for now. =)

Got mine at the dealer today and I am about to install it.
Looks simple but any heads-up would be appreciated.

Yea thats what I was worried about too, the alarm system. I think they have some the wiring for the alarm system connected to the ignition switch wiring. Do you have to split your ignition switch wires and connect your alarm wires?
