After BHG, Loud Ticking?, Please help

Well got done with my head gasket repair, new gaskets all around, everything in top notch shape. When I started her up, there is a loud ticking sound coming from what sounds to be the valve train.

Now I know about ticking lifters, but it seems louder? maybe, my lifters never really ticked. How loud do they tick?

Could this have to do with the viscosity oil I put in (10w-40)?

Should I go out and get 5w-30 right away? will that fix it?

What else could it be?

I didn't run her for long, as I didn't want to cause any damage, but the idle was weird, dropping from 1800 to 1500 or so and then back up.

Any ideas on that?

Thanks

Double check your timing. If that's fine, just change oil again.

Could be a lifter tick.

After my BHG repair, I had one lifter that ticked incessantly until about 6 miles of driving afterward. It was quite loud also. I even thought I screwed up the timing too! Don't change the viscosity of the oil, it will go away.

I agree with 93lsz, to me it sounds like your timing is off.

mine did the same thing this is normal. the oil has not circulated. It did it for about 25 min then it got quiet. Make sure your oil level is normal.

i just finished mines also.... wow a lot of people doing HG jobs lately. mines was ticking loud also after starting it up. i had a valve job done so i was pretty sure the heads were in tip top condition. after a while it got all lub'd up and it went away. check your timing, cuz as i learned the hard way a tooth off can kick your ass

Looks like I'll finally be starting mine up tonight after a summer-long head gasket job ... i completely redid the heads, so now I know to be ready for some ticking ... thanks for the heads up.

If I don't come back to this thread soon with positive news, just assume it didn't work and I pushed the car off a cliff.

it will tick for a while because when u take the heads to the machine shop they resurface the heads replace the valve if they are worn replace the valves seals for sure and the valves guides so once they do all that yes your engine will tick for little bit and then it should go back to normal i had the the same issue when i replace the valves on my cousin RLthe engine for 20 mn and then went away
