Last week I had my standard Bose OEM stereo on a 93 L taken out by a local audio shop. I was having them see if they could repair the display being too dim to see, I've read many people have had a similar problem. They said they would take a look at it and get back to me. Today I called and was told that to repair it would take 3-5 weeks and cost about $298! It would have to be sent to California. What should I do? The guy asked what else was wrong with the stereo system and I told him the left front speaker was not as loud and the right and that the right front speaker often sounded fuzzy especially with bass. I told him I read it could be the amp. He reccomended replacing the radio, but (correct me if I'm wrong), that would entail not only replacing the head unit but all the speakers and that would be very expensive. I like the Bose radio and would like to keep it, plus I just spent $220 on a CD Changer for it. Please help, any advice or reccomendations would be greatly appreciated, sorry about the length of the post.

Yeah I looked at them before I had mine sent to the local place. I didn't want to send it away really. They didn't even mention the display light. I looked at another Bose repair place from a link on here, but thought I could get it fixed locally. Thanks for the help, but now that I'm in this mess what do I do?

that sounds more like an AMP problem to me than the headunit.
But wait, i see that you have an L model which do not come with amps. So yes it is a head unit problem. The amplier are built into the headunits on the L models. |

Does your Bose Premium work ok, and will it work in my car? I can buy it for the cost of shipping? I think I'm confused. Also, are you guys suggesting I keep the Bose system regardless. So should I get mine back from the audio place I have it now and send it somewhere that specializes in Bose instead of paying $298 to be sent to Cali.
Thanks |

There was no sound coming out of the radio, every once in a while there was fuzz on the speakers but no other sound.
I took the radio apart, every board separated from another. Cleaned all the contact points. That seemed to help for a while, but did not improve the screen brightness. I pulled it back apart and went over the boards very carefully and located some little square items on one of the boards that had shifted and were not soldered down on the board any more. They must have shifted when the radio got hot or over time since the board was mounted vertically in the radio. Pull the innumerable screws out of the radio and keep up with where they came from. There is one solder joint that needs to be desoldered when you pull the radio apart so locate that when you begin the disassembly. I removed the original solder with a solder wick and then replaced the square whatcha-macallits with new solder and put everything back together. I sanded the post connectors with a little 2000 grit sandpaper and put grease back on every connector before sliding all the boards together. Now the thing works like a charm and the display is readable. It dims when you turn the lights on and the CD changer part is fully functional. If you dont know how to solder, this will be a very hard task, but still do-able. If you don't like complexity, this may no be the first job like this I would try, but if you take your time, this is a very easy job. I did not take pictures and I do regret that, but may be if one of you would like to send me your radio, I can fix it and take some pictures for you. Nominal fee plus shipping would be in order, but then the rest will know how to fix it.

Hey hondaman23 this sounds like my problem with my premium sound stock stereo unit. The screen is very dim. Which square whatcha-macallits are you talking about? Or on which circuit board? Or do think that by sandpapering the connectors the screen will light up again? I have taken apart the front face of the stereo to get to the screen display and I remember disconnecting a flat plastic wire, I wonder if cleaning those copper leads will improve the display. When it is real dark, at night, I can barely read the frequency display. |

no it will not, unless you rewire ur whole car for the speaker wiring and amp wiring. The non-premium has an amp already built into the head unit whereas the Bose premium has an amp in the back seat.
