Car 1: 95 Legend LS Coupe

Brand new legend owner, but I got a little advice for ya

First off, let me start by saying that this forum is remarkable. It seems like everybody on this site has a great attitude, and I've yet to see any fighting, bickering or overall misunderstandings. Legend owners really seem to be a mature breed (used to own a Diamante-read some posts in that forum for what I'm using as a basis for comparison).

So anyway, I just bought my first legend earlier this week- a Sheerwood green 95 LS couple automatic with what seems like all the toys. It has 140000 miles, but its in great shape all around.
There are a couple of problems that I have with it however..

1. The tranny downshifts incrdibly hard from 1st to 2nd. By seacrching this forum I've found that its probly the tranny mounts or solenoids. Any additional info on this would be great before I take it down to my tranny guy (were good buddies, I used to own a Diamante ). Also, maybe a flush would be a good idea, although i've gotten mixed reviews on whether these are good or bad for our AT's. Any ideas?

2. Bose amp is garbage. There is CONSTANT static coming from the front right and back speakers. I've heard there's a kit to fix this amp with, anyone know about this.
If not, I'm swappin it our for my Boston Acoustic speakers/ Alpine v12 amp/Mephis 12's setup from the D. Lookin for a good headunit if anybody has one for sale, or just some advice. I've kept the JVC Kamelon in the Mitsu for my brother.

Now what happened in the last 2 days with this car drove me absolutely crazy.
First off, I buy the car on Monday after me and my buddy checked it over from top to bottom. Everything looks pretty solid (minus the tranny), and i got a great deal on it, so I was happy. All of a sudden yesterday, the thing starts blowin smoke worse then Bobby Knight. I did nothing out of the ordinary, but I believe it started when i put a bottle of STP fuel injection cleaner in. I mean we're talkin so much smoke from the exhaust i felt guilty just driving it becasue of the poor ******* that is unlucky enough to get behind me at a stoplight.
So I spend the next 24 hours on this site trying to diagnose the situation...what i conclude is that it is not the valve
guides becuase the smoke is constant and increases when pressing on the gas, not the head gasket because the temp is constant and coolant level is full and no coolant in the oil or exhast, so i'm thinkin ....PISTON RINGS oh god say it aint so.
So here I am sittin lookin at prices on JDM engines pissed as can be when my mechanic buddy calls me back and askes when the last time the PCV valve was changed. I look at the lady's service records and see it was about 15K miles ago...hmmm maybe, nahhh couldnt be, or could it?!?!?! Could a $10 part actually be cause such immense amount of smoke all of a sudden? Well, after a trip to the store and a 15sec swap out, TAADAA! The baby's runnin like beauty, abosolutely amazing. The dealer could have told me, or anybody that it was a head gasket, valve guide, piston rings yatta yatta yatta and of course no argument becasue that diagnosis seems to be the consensus here and with everyone I talk to. Well needless to say my advice to you guys is that when you see this happening, replace the PCV valve and cross your fingers.

Peace,
TRON

My pleasure!

I didnt really wanna post until I had somethin useful to say, its seems like any questions I have had in past week were answered by just searchin the site. Still wouldnt mind some replies to them anyway tho ,especially the tranny thing!

Also, whats year antenna will work with my 95? If i'm not mistaken i can use from 92-96, mines cracked at the knuckle, might as well replace the whole thing. BTW I know of a great site to find used parts called

www.car-part.com

Browses junkyard's inventory to find what your lookin for. Found a whole antenna mast for $50 at this junkyard in lil' Rhode Island(what we lack in size we make up for in heart, killa buds, and URI chicks) Anyone else here from RI? If so where?

Peace,

Welcome to the boards! Sounds like you will get along great with all of us. It really is incredible how far out of their way people will go for each other on here.

About the audio system, I am replacing mine too. I have an Alpine 9815 headunit and some alpine speakers sitting in my room that I will hopefully be putting in this monday. I have heard many great things about the alpine HUs and I'm sure it will push the speakers nicely with the 60x4 amp. Check out the for sale section, and ebay of course for a headunit. I got mine from etronics.com, they have really good prices and I got my package 3 days after I ordered it. If your not keeping your old bose stuff you can sell it here, there are usually people that need it.

Also, I'm pretty sure any 91-95 antenna mast will work.

hello and welcome to the forums!

As far as hard 1st to 2nd shift is concerned, it is faily common for Legends.
However, if you are experiencing a severe jerk, my advice would be to get your tranny and engine mounts checked. if either of those mounts are broken, it would cause a severe jerk.

Thanks for the PCV information. Good Luck with your legend!]

p.s. I also owned a Diamente for 1 year before buying my first legend.

Pertaining to the harsh shifting: Check the rear trans mount (usually a clunk sound from under console). Have a 3x flush/refill of the A/T with at least 30 min of driving between each drain/refill. Use only Acura A/T fluid. I would not recommend a power flush, only drain/refill. Another idea is to change the radiator if it is 4+ yrs old. The A/T cooler in it could be gunked up. When you remove the A/T drain bolt the first time, check the amt and condition of the particulate. Any large pieces and you have A/T problems.

There was a recall on the Bose amp for module replacement. Some have also experienced fabric separation of the speakers. You should also note that if you decide to sell or trade the Legend without the OEM system you may be offered considerably less than the ave trade-in price. Remove the OEM system and pack it away. Do not damage any of the OEM wiring. A former Legend owner removed an OEM Bose system, and the trade-in dealer was going to substract the retail cost ($2,000+) from the trade-in value. The owner went nuts locating used components.

I do not wish to be the bearer of bad news but a PCV should not be becoming clogged up in 15k miles.
I would start with the removal of the valve cover to which the PCV is located.

Thanks for the reply, I'm gonna take a look at the tranny mounts this week. As for the Bose system, the only thing I plan on doing with it once its out of the car is fixing it. I'm still in limbo as to whether or not I want remove it or not though. Maybe I'll just fix the amp and leave it in, i'm not quite sure yet.

The common recomended replacement of a PCV valve is 15K miles(mine was actually closer to 20K) It wasnt incredibly clogged but replacing it has helped alot. I've actually heard of this workin before and on other cars.
The car still smokes at startup unfortunately but goes away completly after 5mins of driving, whereas before the new valve it smoked so bad I'm surprised I didnt get a ticket.
Are you recomending I remove the valve cover and replace the gaskets. There isnt a drop oil anywhere on the engine so I think those are ok. Would you mind specifying a little more as to what you mean, I'm what you would call engine literate, not engine savvy .
Thanks,
TRON

STP Injector Cleaner

Fist of all congrats on the Legend, great cars.

1. Adding any injector cleaner will cause any car to smoke for a short period of time due to the carbon build-up burning off. This usually stops after a day or so.

2. The trans on Legends does shift hard. Try the 3X fluid change and power flush, it helped me alot. Also look at the mounts (replace).

3. The Bose amp recall was only on the 91-92 Legends, but the static may still be from your amp. Try replacing the bad speakers with good ones to determin if it is the amp or speakers. If it is the speakers, just replace them with good 2 ohm speakers. If it is the amp, replace with another Bose amp or replace the whole system.

Welcome to a great board and
Good Luck

wat i was thinking of is changing the legend's auto tranny to the 1st gen TL tranny. i went in it one and it was dammnnn smooth. lol. probably costly for the engine, but i'll probably end up doing that if everything else doesn't help.
