I believe the TCU controls shifting of transmission through rpms and level of pedal travel, I am not sure whether it is dependent on speed, someone else who knows more about the mechanics of our legend can chime in...

D4 dash light cluster is the significant alert. There are many previous posts
about the issue. The VSS is a minor repair; the tranny is a bigger issue.
My Acuras are manual 5 speeds; they are not vulnerable to VSS/tranny
problems. Either DIY the VSS($85.00,)or pay a mechanic/dealer ($400.00?)
Procrastinating increases the costs, because of the transmission problems
resulting from faulty VSS input. Other, automatic trans. owners may have better insight/recommendations. Search the D4/VSS subject and keep
posting for more definitive "how to" advice. you can do the VSS DIY if you
are so inclined. (Search.) Good luck.
Another issue is that our Tranny's have Electronic Shifting - if there is a alternator, battery, starter or other issue that might affect the electrics, then that may be where your problem is.
When my alternater was going bad and would act up, the tranny had problems shifting between the gears.

The VSS is one of the 30 or so inputs that help control a transmission. Thats why they are so hard to pinpoint, and tranny techs make a fortune in diagnostic time. All the inputs in turn must have the output, so it can affect performance.

There isn't a "separate" TCU but there is a daughter board in the ECU for the auto transmissions for those cars equiped.

The 5MTs don't seem to have as many issues with it... but VSS failure also seems to be one of those problems that has a huge range of symptoms.
Just to light the spark... I replaced the VSS in my BMW a few months ago (speedo just falls to zero in that car when it goes)... $27 in parts and 2 bolts later and I was back up and running. Seriously, it took like 10 minutes to fix. I was very mad at the japanese that day.

Why were you mad at the Japanese? I think it took me a total of about 45 minutes only because I had to remove and replace the bottom dust cover. Once it was off replacing the VSS was very simple.
As for it causing problems with shifting, I never experienced that. I'm not saying it can't but I picked up my car with an intermittent VSS and drove it over 500 miles home. I then went probably another 200 before I replaced it all in town driving. Never had a problem.
