Talking Custom wood shift knob, possible group buy

I was looking for a wood shift knob for my 5speed Legend and cannot find one that have the gear engraving or custom engraving on it. So I ask one of my friend who work in a machine shop and have CNC machine. I'm thinking if there are many people interested in getting a custom made wood shift knob for your Legend, then we can make a group buy for the shift knob.

Here is some of my idea. The shift knob will be the same wood type/pattern as the OEM wood trim with custom engraving of the gear position (1-2-3-4-5-R) and may be the word "Legend" on it. He can make the engraving for the 6speed too. Basically the engraving will be done by CNC machine and the finished might be filled with color at your choices (or clear coat). And yes, he can do the engraving for the 6speed too if you want

The best way to do this is I might do some research and get some wood samples from the 3rd party company and buy the one that have the closest match of the wood style/color + easy for installation. Then we can do the engraving pretty easy if we get the first one made. It will cost quite a bit for the first one to be made since it is a custom job and he want to do the job right and get the engraving done perfectly with the color coating of the letters.

If there are more than 10 people interested in this, we can start making the first batch since it cost quite a bit to make the first sample (plus he need to try the engraving with several wood sample first). Anyway, I will be making one for myself as an example. This will happen after there are more than 10 people confirmed that they want one of course since I have to pay him to make the sample.

Basically the cost for the first run is about $300 (for the design, test, run/painting, etc.). So I figure the possible price structure is

10 people -> $35 each for the custom engraving
20 people -> $30 each for the custom engraving
30+ people -> $25 each for the custom engraving

If you are interested in a custom made wood shift knob, please reply to this tread and we can begin the head count and confirmation after we get about 10 people on this project. Remember I'm not in this for profit. This is strictly for Legend community support so everyone get a nice custom made wood shift knob. Most of the payment will be paid to him + painting job. And I want one of the knob myself

If there are many people interested in the custom made wood shift knobs, I might try to negotiate with the company who made the knob to get a better price. Roughly including the knob itself (+ custom engraving), it will be around $75-85 depending on how many people interested in this.

Please post if you are interested in the knob and indicate what type you want 5speed or 6speed

Mocca

P.S. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to send a PM or e-mail to me

Hmm, sounds good, how about automatic shift knobs? Same shape as stock in the 94-95 sedans but wood instead of rubber/leather?

I would be interested in a 6-speed shift knob. I will fully commit to this once I see what the fit and finish of the knob is.

If at all possible see what you can do for us auto stick boys. I've been looking for a long time and this sounds like the answer.

I'm looking into making the wood knob in my friend machine shop. I'm extremely busy and so do he this week so it might be sometime before I can go to talk to him about the details. Anyway, if anyone interested in the custom wood knob, it is definitely doable but my friend need at least 10 people to join up for each type of the knob (auto or manual) since it will be totally different design.

BTW, for those of you that have auto, does auto Legend shift knob come with a button? If so, it might complicate thing a bit. I was thinking in a line of buying a plain wood knob from a 3rd party and then my friend can do the custom engraving and color painting. Making the wood knob from scratch will be very costly and time consuming consider the level of perfectionist I'm

So right now we have 3 manual and 3 auto. Anyone else interested in the custom wood knob, please post here

Very Interested in a 6-speed knob.

The design of the OEM knob definately has some problems and my replacement knob is already showing wear. I would be willing to pay more than the $35 for a high quality 6-speed shift knob.

Thank you for researching this concept.
